In this post, the key messages of chapter 2 are discussed, and we will continue next week with the second part of chapter 2.
▶️ In the EU there are 4491 large dams according to the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) 2023 register of dams and 33% are for multiple uses. According to ICOLD 2023, in the EU, 46% of single purpose reservoirs are for hydropower, 23% of multiple purpose reservoirs have hydropower as a first use, 6% as second use and 4% as third or fourth use. Overall, 48% of EU reservoirs are powered.
▶️ Using the AMBER database, 450,000 barriers can be counted in EU’s rivers and less than 10% are dams. According to data from UNIDO, Voith Hydro and the JRC hydropower database, I estimated that less than 25,000 hydropower plants exist in the EU.
▶️ In the years 1996–2019, a total of 342 barriers were dismantled in Europe, approximately 95% of which are so-called low barriers below 7.5 m height (and, not necessarily for hydropower, see above), restoring free flowing rivers and with benefits on the environment (dam removal EU)
▶️ According to Eurostat, in 2022, the hydropower installed capacity was approximately 154 GW (46 GW of #pumped-storage hydro - PSH-, ¼ of the global installed capacity is in the EU).
▶️ In the last decade, the annual energy generation from hydropower in the EU has oscillated between 322 and 398 TWh/y depending on the hydrological conditions with the average value being 363 TWh/y (including around 45 TWh/y from PSH)
▶️ The installed hydropower per inhabitant is 0.34 kW/person in the EU, 0.31 kW/person in the U.S. and 0.30 kW/person in China, demonstrating that the EU is a strategic user of hydropower.
▶️ According to International Hydropower Association (IHA) (2024), in 2023 the most relevant hydropower development in the EU were realized in Austria, Germany and Finland.
▶️ The technical energy storage capacity of PSH reservoirs can be estimated with the data available in the IHA database at 1300 GWh (259 GWh closed loop and 957 from open loop), and the actual usable one is around 500 GWh. More information in the recent paper here
