The Darwinian Evolution of the AD/ADAS Tech Ecosystem Tens of billions of dollars have been invested in the development of autonomous driving and ADAS technology over the past decade and a half. The industry has gone through the roller coaster of Gartner’s Hype Cycle, reaching a high for AD tech around 2017. It seems that we have now come out of the through of disillusion, through not without pain. Whereas several companies are forging ahead with commercial deployments, some have pivoted to less demanding use cases, while others have collapsed. This Darwinian process, which I first analyzed in November 2022 in “Autonomous Driving Consolidation Intensifies”, has accelerated. Recently, large amounts of founding have gone to a select group of companies whereas many have faced difficulties raising capital, which has led to business rescoping or worse. I recently published a new version of the AD/ADAS Ecosystem Landscape with my partners at Autonomy. Over 400 companies are featured across 16 domains including sensing, compute, software, mapping, simulation & validation and more. A high-definition version can be downloaded here. The document will be updated overtime to reflect changes in the ecosystem. Robotaxis: Progress and Setbacks Back in May 2022, I analyzed the state and promises of robotaxi and autonomous trucking development in my article “Are AVs for People and Freight Close to Scaling?”  I had another look in July 2024 with a new article dedicated to the state of robotaxi deployment. After a tumultuous period, it is worth reassessing the state of the ecosystem. Waymo continues to forge ahead at a reasoned pace. The Alphabet subsidiary now operates without safety operators in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and is preparing to do the same in Austin. Last May, the company performed 50,000 fully autonomous rides per week. The next big steps include obtaining the permit to operate at SF international airport — Waymo is already running at Phoenix airport. Another big step will be the introduction of Chinese-made, bespoke Zeekr robotaxi (with a removable steering wheel) in the fleet. Such a vehicle was spotted in San Francisco this month with its full array of sensors. Amazon-owned Zoox had announced a commercial launch in Las Vegas before end 2024. It appears that this milestone has slipped to early 2025. In the meantime, a handful of Zoox’ bespoke vehicles operate on fixed routes in Las Vegas and around the company’s Silicon Valley HQ. Pony.ai, which operates over 300 robotaxis in China, recently signed partnerships in S. Arabia and Luxemburg. It has plans to launch robotaxi operations in both countries. In China, Baidu, WeRide, AutoX, and Pony.ai were collectively operating fleets of robotaxis in five cities ...
