Censure of the French government: A political earthquake, a breeze for the markets Jean-Jacques Ohana, board member of Ai For Alpha, was on BFM BUSINESS to share his insights into the political instability in France on financial markets! From a political perspective, the censure of a French government by the National Assembly is an event of exceptional significance. France has only experienced one such precedent in 1962, with the censure of the Pompidou government during debates over the constitutional reform introducing the direct election of the President of the Republic. At the time, this act triggered a genuine institutional shockwave. Observers feared that such an event, in a tense economic context, would lead to major disruptions in financial markets. Expectations included a widening spread between France and Germany, signaling a lack of confidence in French debt, and further weakening of the euro against the dollar. However, these fears did not materialize. Financial markets remained calm: The France-Germany spread even slightly eased, decreasing from 89 to 76 basis points following the episode, reflecting investors' intact confidence in France's ability to maintain economic stability. The euro remains stable: While EUR/USD follows a broader downward trend driven by structural factors such as U.S. monetary policy or economic uncertainties in the eurozone, this political event did not exacerbate the situation. On the other hand, French stock indices continue to underperform significantly compared to other European markets since the beginning of the year. This decline was further aggravated by an untimely dissolution, at least from a financial standpoint, as it fuels political instability. Since January 2024, the CAC 40 has lagged 20% behind Germany's DAX, while French small caps have underperformed their European counterparts by 10%. France's economic situation, though concerning within a European context marked by deindustrialization and decline — particularly in sectors like automotive — is not irreversible. However, it requires successive governments to regain control of a fiscal trajectory that currently seems out of hand. 🎥Watch the video to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eAGt6T3x #Finance #ArtificialIntelligence #MarketInsights #US
