In my work with resistant clients, I've found two strategies particularly effective: reflective listening and validation. I prioritize understanding their perspective rather than imposing solutions. Offering clients options empowers them by fostering a sense of control. People generally resist being told what to do. When clients feel validated and heard, they experience a greater sense of belonging and acceptance, which encourages them to open up more readily. I also consistently acknowledge and express gratitude for their willingness to share, especially when they disclose difficult experiences.

Important: 1. Listen the client thoroughly. Then give pause and convey in an assertive manner, I have a concern would you to like to know. 2. I wish to have healthy and long lasting relationship with you. But many a time you resist listening to valid arguments. 3. Convey the client long lasting and healthy relationship demands understanding between both parties. Do you agree ? 4. We must give the client serious heed.

Connecting with anyone who is resistant takes time. It’s their journey not yours so it’s important to take time and let them set the pace but within set perimeters. Aim to achieve one small step at a time and be sure to reward this, knowing an achievement has been made and having received recognition for this can make the steps easier to take.

I would try and find and build on a common interest, idea or hobby. Step back and go back to building a trusting rapport. Ensure that active communication is used and that the interaction feels genuine.

I believe we need to understand and be mindful this is their journey not ours. Call or labelling them resistant is unhelpful. Time is measured in how they feel and how they would like to move forward. Giving them time to develop trust, asking questions and seeking their view rather than trying to force my own professionalism on them.

Building trust with a resistant client in therapy requires patience and consistency. -Reflective Listening: Actively listening and reflecting on the client’s thoughts and feelings helps them feel heard and understood, which is vital for overcoming resistance. -Consistent Boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries creates a stable and safe environment, making clients more likely to trust the process. -Transparency: Sharing the goals and purpose of therapy helps clients understand what to expect and feel more comfortable. From my experience, creating a safe, non-judgmental space and normalizing their experiences through relatable examples can help hesitant clients feel less alone. Over time, this fosters trust and openness in therapy.
