To build a strong rapport with overwhelmed patients by their medical condition, I would approach the situation with empathy, active listening, and provide compassionate and clear communication. Acknowledging their feelings and providing emotional support is essential to foster trust. I would ensure that they feel heard and understood by offering reassurance and explaining their treatment options in a way that's easy to grasp. By creating a non-judgmental, patient-centered, respectful and supportive environment, I can foster a positive therapeutic relationship that empowers them to engage with their care plan, reducing their anxiety and helping them regain a sense of control over their health.

Percebo que os pacientes ficam mais tranquilos e seguros quando: - Ouço sem interromper e busco compreender de que maneira aquilo que o está afetando no dia a dia; - Sou clara sobre o problema que me foi apresentado e sobre possíveis possibilidades dentro da nutrição; - Esclareço qual conduta seria mais relevante para o caso, mas deixo-o à vontade para opinar sobre o que funcionaria melhor para sua própria rotina, acredito que isso gera confiança e comprometimento com o tratamento;

Ask questions before seeing them if possible. Do some research on their condition. Let them talk, use open ended questions. Be empathetic w/active listening. Know it will be more than a face to face for 10 min. Don't give eye contact to the door. Know you may be w/them for an hour+ if that's what it takes. They ARE the most important thing to you at the present moment. Sit w/them vs stand. They perceive it was longer. Discuss a plan going forward involving them & using all the resources you do know, knowledge, & experience you have; people want to know something is going to be DONE and someone has a PLAN to help them. Continue to follow up, check off what actions have been done/completed.
