The Carbon Flows report is a compilation of supply and demand of fossil and renewable carbon on a global and European level. From raw materials to end-of-life, including special focus on the chemicals and plastics industries, the report outlines current scenarios and pathways to complete defossilization by 2050. The Nova Institute experts assessed data from a multitude of sources. A wide range of data on material flow are used to compile a comprehensive inventory of carbon stocks and flows. A closed-loop system is one in which items are returned to their natural state, often referred to as a cradle-to-cradle system. This system ensures that products do not end up in landfills. While recycling should function as a closed-loop system, the process is energy-intensive and only a small percentage of products are recyclable.
