  • School violence is preventable, if we know (AND IF WE REPORT) the red flags and the warning signs. The Friday Night Lights are going to start turning on at schools across the country this weekend. Does your school have a plan for a shooting during a high school football game? In the last year, sports events have overtaken dismissal as the most common time period for a shooting on a k-12 school campus.

NYT: “Experts who study the histories of gunmen said the emerging picture of Mr. Crooks looked more like a 21st-century school shooter than a John Wilkes Booth.” Computer records show he searched for “major depressive disorder”, researched the Oxford, MI school shooter, looked up how to make explosives, and had a drone in his vehicle. While there is not a definitive profile of a mass shooter, the most common situation is a young man who is depressed and actively suicidal before the attack. Many school shootings and mass shootings are planned as both a bombing and shooting. Weaponized drones are a new threat that schools need to be preparing for right now. From studying 60 years of school shooters, I believe that they share a collection of motivations that are like a variety of gumballs that can fall out of the machine. A school shooter might have one of these traits, or might have all of them.

How many schools have enough guidance counselors to regularly check-in with every student? A school shooting is a cry for help. If an adult will take time to listen, almost every attack can be prevented. A 13-year-old Osceola Middle School student in Okeechobee County is in juvenile detention after the sheriff's office said Saturday he planned a mass shooting at his school nearly one month ago. A guidance counselor "was checking on a student. During that time, the student shared concerning thoughts including detailed plans to carry out a shooting attack at the school." The boy said during an assessment that he was hearing voices, and those voices had led him to plan a shooting, the sheriff’s office stated. He reportedly claimed the voices were those of the two students behind the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School.

  • Threat Assessment is a game changer. Everybody needs to understand

As threat assessment professionals, we make our assessments based on the information available to us. Those who are on the pathway to violence understand that detection means an end to their plan. As a result, these people operate as “hunters” and do their best to conceal their plans. Stating that someone does NOT pose a threat does not take into account the unknowns. The FBI publication “Making Prevention A Reality: Identifying, Assessing, and Managing the Threat of Targeted Violence” is a phenomenal resource that my team references in every one of our assessments. In this publication (authored by legends in our field), communication and person of concern’s behavior is described and a corresponding level of concern is assigned. You’ll notice that NO concern is not a level described, LOW is the lowest level of concern assigned. A thorough assessment with an articulated FBI level of concern is a suggested best practice for threat assessors. This is your best avenue to identify true threats and articulate your findings that cite experts in the field. You can download this publication and other great resources from the FBI’s website. #fbi #threatmanagement #threatassessment Molly Amman, JD, CTM Karie Gibson, Psy.D., LP

  • Unfortunately, we don't have SROs in Brazil. Maybe in the future our schools will understand the importance of these professionals.
