I had the opportunity to support the Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon held at Goorm Square this past September. The entire event was conducted in English, and it was an eye-opening experience to see firsthand just how many foreign developers and non-developers from various fields are active here in Korea. It really highlighted the growing diversity of the tech community!! 😉 As a DevRel, attending the hackathon and gathering feedback from participants provided valuable learning experiences. I gained new insights into the finer details that need to be considered when organizing an event from an operational standpoint. A big thank you to Josie Daw for suggesting this opportunity and enabling me to learn so much! ❤️
Last weekend, September 7-8, we gathered in Pangyo for the second edition of the Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we achieved. Over the past nine months, I poured my heart into organizing this event, striving to make it bigger, better, and more diverse than ever—and I’m thrilled to say, we delivered! 🌟 (Nearly) 150 Participants, 25 Teams, and 12 Workshops Our two-track structure welcomed everyone, from seasoned coders to beginners and non-tech enthusiasts, offering a pressure-free environment to learn, connect, and contribute to social good across two straight days. ✨ Commitment to Diversity One of our proudest achievements was the diversity of our participants: - 66% men - 32% women - 1% non-binary This is far better than the usual tech gender ratios in Korea and globally (usually 20% women). We also ensured equal gender representation amongst our workshop presenters, judges, and organizers, proving that diversity in Korea (even in tech!) is achievable. 🥗 Inclusivity We went beyond the norm in Korea by catering to diverse dietary needs, offering vegan, vegetarian, and halal options for every meal and snack, making many feel included in ways they hadn’t experienced at other Korean events. We even provided a designated prayer room with mats—possibly a first for a hackathon in Korea! 🛠️ Innovating for Social Good All our teams created amazing, impactful projects, and our judges faced the tough task of selecting winners. Congratulations to: 1. Waggy 2. Safe Nest 3. Silver Road We can’t wait to see their continued impact! 🙏 Gratitude and a Special Shout-out This event had its challenges, but the dedication of participants, volunteers, and judges was inspiring. Special thanks to MVP Dagmara Lukanko, who managed all volunteers, created every design, and reached out to over 100 potential sponsors. Dagmara’s creativity, support, and tireless efforts were invaluable—this hackathon couldn’t have been the same without her! 💡 Thank You to Our Sponsors From just three sponsors last year to 21 this year, your support—whether through space, swag, prizes, or live translations—helped take our event to new heights. Your belief in us and our mission for social good means the world (and helps us change the world!). I am filled with gratitude and pride for everyone who made this hackathon a reality. Let’s continue to push boundaries, celebrate diversity, and harness technology for social good. ❤️ #SeoulTechImpact #HackathonForSocialGood #DiversityInTech
