I had the opportunity to support the Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon held at Goorm Square this past September. The entire event was conducted in English, and it was an eye-opening experience to see firsthand just how many foreign developers and non-developers from various fields are active here in Korea. It really highlighted the growing diversity of the tech community!! 😉 As a DevRel, attending the hackathon and gathering feedback from participants provided valuable learning experiences. I gained new insights into the finer details that need to be considered when organizing an event from an operational standpoint. A big thank you to Josie Daw for suggesting this opportunity and enabling me to learn so much! ❤️

Last weekend, September 7-8, we gathered in Pangyo for the second edition of the Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we achieved. Over the past nine months, I poured my heart into organizing this event, striving to make it bigger, better, and more diverse than ever—and I’m thrilled to say, we delivered! 🌟 (Nearly) 150 Participants, 25 Teams, and 12 Workshops Our two-track structure welcomed everyone, from seasoned coders to beginners and non-tech enthusiasts, offering a pressure-free environment to learn, connect, and contribute to social good across two straight days. ✨ Commitment to Diversity One of our proudest achievements was the diversity of our participants: - 66% men - 32% women - 1% non-binary This is far better than the usual tech gender ratios in Korea and globally (usually 20% women). We also ensured equal gender representation amongst our workshop presenters, judges, and organizers, proving that diversity in Korea (even in tech!) is achievable. 🥗 Inclusivity We went beyond the norm in Korea by catering to diverse dietary needs, offering vegan, vegetarian, and halal options for every meal and snack, making many feel included in ways they hadn’t experienced at other Korean events. We even provided a designated prayer room with mats—possibly a first for a hackathon in Korea! 🛠️ Innovating for Social Good All our teams created amazing, impactful projects, and our judges faced the tough task of selecting winners. Congratulations to:    1.   Waggy    2.   Safe Nest    3.   Silver Road We can’t wait to see their continued impact! 🙏 Gratitude and a Special Shout-out This event had its challenges, but the dedication of participants, volunteers, and judges was inspiring. Special thanks to MVP Dagmara Lukanko, who managed all volunteers, created every design, and reached out to over 100 potential sponsors. Dagmara’s creativity, support, and tireless efforts were invaluable—this hackathon couldn’t have been the same without her! 💡 Thank You to Our Sponsors From just three sponsors last year to 21 this year, your support—whether through space, swag, prizes, or live translations—helped take our event to new heights. Your belief in us and our mission for social good means the world (and helps us change the world!). I am filled with gratitude and pride for everyone who made this hackathon a reality. Let’s continue to push boundaries, celebrate diversity, and harness technology for social good. ❤️ #SeoulTechImpact #HackathonForSocialGood #DiversityInTech

Disrupting Packaging in Korea and beyond 🇰🇷🇪🇺 @ Packative with B2B Marketplace & Packaging Design AI 📦

Two weeks ago, I had the honor of serving as a judge at the Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon. The energy and creativity from the teams were absolutely inspiring!! Hackathons are something I strongly believe in—they teach resilience and skill up. When you hit a wall, unsure how to move forward, it forces you to rethink, teamwork, pivot, and keep going. Quitting simply isn’t an option, and that’s where the real innovation happens. Not just the 3 winning teams, but all 26 teams delivered cool solutions—I’d love to see some of them make it to the market. This experience took me back to my own hackathon days—my last one as a participant was 11 years ago, fresh off the plane to Korea, and i believe on of the first Hackathons in Seoul and definitely the first Social Impact Hackathon at that time ( Hyekyung Hwang you were ahead of the time and such an innovator! ). ( ➡️ 2013 a short article about that hackathon in the comments ) Seeing how much the scene has grown here, especially with Seoul Tech Impact, and being actually really diverse ... is truly amazing!! Huge shoutout to Josie Daw and the amazing team for pulling off such an large-scale event! 🙌 - Non profit! Just for the good of the People! 🛎 Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Republic of Korea how about you support that team and jump in as a sponsor next year to build a #GlobalKorea ? 😏 All image copyrights go to Aleksandr Li — big thanks for letting me use your amazing shots!

--🎓 Computer Science Student | Aspiring Data Scientist | Passionate about data & AI 📊💻 Software developer | UI/UX Designer

On September 8th, I had the opportunity to take part in my first hackathon in South Korea, the Seoul Tech Impact. As a computer science student studying abroad, I sought new challenges to expand my horizons and discovered this enriching event. It was a 24-hour hackathon that was a real moment of learning, camaraderie and personal growth. I had the pleasure of collaborating with an exceptional team: Salomon D., Aleksandr Li, Jeehay Park and Seongmin Chang. Their enthusiasm and dedication were instrumental in the development of our project, Parmurger. As the front-end developer for Parmurger, I had the opportunity to apply my existing knowledge and learn from my teammates. Our app aimed to reduce food waste by organizing fridge items by expiration dates and suggesting personalized recipes. Each member of our team contributed unique skills and perspectives to make Parmurger a success. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Seoul Tech Impact organizers for their exceptional care and support throughout the event. Their efforts created a conducive environment for innovation and collaboration and I am eager to seek out future opportunities to participate in such events and create lasting memories.✨ #Tech #Hackathon #SeoulTechImpact #IT #TechCommunity #SoftwareDevelopment

Founder at Chatbot Factory | Building Custom LLM Apps for Small Businesses

Last week's Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon was a real inspiration! 💡 I wasn't sure what to expect when I agreed to help organize the event, but I knew that I wanted to surround myself with bright, creative minds that also were drawn to the idea of using their development talents for social good. I knew that putting myself in such an environment would elevate my own creativity and I was NOT disappointed! 150 people, including participants, volunteers, judges, and sponsors came together for a very memorable and impactful two days. We saw some really innovative approaches to the use of AI as well, including an LLM-powered app translating English queries to Korean (making local Korean navigation API more accessible to foreigners), a chatbot creating a safe space for child abuse victims, another chatbot connecting workers with their unions for better access to benefits, an AI persona that can even call my grandmother for me (reminiscent of a Black Mirror scenario 😅) , and several more! These projects showcased how AI can be leveraged to address critical social issues and improve lives! A mandatory shoutout to Josie Daw, Dagmara Lukanko, and Elim Kalilov for their tireless efforts in organizing this event. I was mostly the glorified cheerleader organizer. 😅 And of course, a big thank you to all the volunteers who poured their time and energy into making this hackathon a success, as well as the handful of sponsors. Events like these remind us of the power of community and collaboration in pushing for meaningful change. Looking forward to seeing how these innovative ideas evolve and impact our world! #SeoulTechImpact #TechForGood #AIInnovation

I was thrilled to volunteer once again at the Seoul Tech Impact 2024 hackathon, where I witnessed a remarkable increase in diversity among participants, including passionate hackers, dedicated workshop leaders, insightful judges, and hardworking volunteers. It was inspiring to see teams come together and create impactful solutions within just 24 hours. What sets Seoul Tech Impact apart from other hackathons in Korea is its unique focus on social impact and its community-driven approach. Despite operating on a limited budget, the organizing team worked tirelessly to foster an inclusive environment, proving that meaningful impact comes from a dedicated community. Special thanks to #누구보다일에진심입니다만 for being a supportive sponsor—looking forward to growing number of women in tech and in the future events. For those unfamiliar, a ‘Hackathon’ combines the words “hack” and “marathon.” It’s an event, usually lasting several days, where people collaborate intensively to solve problems or explore new opportunities.

I participated in Seoul Tech Impact hackathon at Pangyo goorm Goormsquare on 7-8th September, and this experience went beyond what I could have imagined. Unlike previous hackathons where we had more time for development, this one pushed us to our limits with only 24 hours to build, sprint, and present. It was a true test of our capabilities. For the first time, I used "Framer" as a collaborative design tool, given the tight timeline and the need to create and publish a prototype quickly. Framer's features, especially for responsive design and animation, helped us save significant time during the publishing process. Our target audience for the project was quite specific: art students facing the challenges of preparing their graduation exhibitions. One of our teammates, who had firsthand experience with this issue, shared that while many beautiful works are created, most of them are discarded after the exhibition, despite the significant resources invested. So, we wanted to turn this unproductive process into something more sustainable. Our service, **MAYO (My Art, Your Object)**, allows university-certified students to upload and sell their art, along with their portfolios. This gives them an opportunity to recoup some of the resources they spent creating their pieces. We streamlined the art registration process by providing a CMS format and 3D modeling functionality, making it easier for artists to upload their works. Buyers, on the other hand, can purchase emerging artists’ work at a relatively affordable price, helping reduce waste and contributing to environmental sustainability. During the hackathon, we successfully implemented key features such as the CMS registration system, payment, student authentication login, AI content curation, and 3D modeling generation. Despite the time constraints, our teamwork allowed us to achieve a lot. However, with only five minutes to present, it leaves us with a sense of fulfillment, yet a touch of bittersweetness, knowing how much more we could have showcased. While we didn’t win awards, I’m proud of what we accomplished in just 24 hours. It was a great experience, working closely with such a dedicated team. You can check out our project here: [MAYO on Devpost](https://lnkd.in/gC9U8EN7). You can also view our service demo in the Figma prototype with GIFs. [MAYO FIGMA] (https://lnkd.in/g2Kh5KpQ) Special thanks to the Seoul Tech Impact team and organizers: Josie Daw, Dagmara Lukanko, Bryan "Beege" 미르 Berry, Andrey Seas, J.D. ,Elim Kalilov and all volunteers, sponsors, judges for providing such a diverse and enriching experience. And of course, a huge thank you to my amazing team, _Team Mayo (고재민 Hyerim Park, Jeongmin Lee, and 조하운) for the incredible teamwork and collaboration! Mayo Team rocks! #SeoulTechImpact #Hackathon #2024 #pangyo #goormsquare #MAYO

On September 7-8, I have participated in the Seoul Tech Impact hackaton with my team and we got the second place among 25 teams (of around 150 people) 🎉 We did a project called Safe Nest web app for more comfortable, confidential child abuse reports by kids themselves. Initially we had hot discussions about how to handle the confidentiality (1), moral side of keeping child abuse records in our database (2) and how to flow and design more kids (especially abused ones) friendly (3). After that we have created a full stack web app using Next.js, NextUI, Vercel Posgres, Open AI API. We were 3 in our team, I worked on front-end part of it, while Nicolas M. did mainly back end and system design, and Sebin Hong did project initialization, deployment and DB management. This project wouldn't happen without Sebin's brilliant idea and persistence, and Nicolas's mastery. We want to continue working on it so that it has the real impact on child abuses in all societies. After reading how the hackaton was organized and how much effort, time have been spent for it, I can't praise enough the organizers, Josie Daw, Dagmara Lukanko, Andrey Seas, J.D., Elim Kalilov, volunteers and others for their effort to make this event happen.
