As we wrap up 2024, I want to reflect back on one of the important event of the year—meeting 아스트라제네카 (AstraZeneca) and advancing FUST Lab’s wastewater treatment technology to the global stage. Out of 500 innovative solutions, our ultrasonic microbubble advanced oxidation process (AOP) technology was selected, and we were invited to Industrial Future Summit in Stockholm where we had meeting with AstraZeneca to have an in-depth discussions about our solution. The journey began in May when were first reached out by Combient Foundry, suggesting that our ultrasonic wastewater solution may align with AstraZeneca’s search for innovative technologies to meet their Scope 3 sustainability goals. Combient Foundry is a global venture alliance that provides a platform bridging startups with global companies. During this time, AstraZeneca was specifically seeking a new wastewater treatment method that does not involve incineration of waste, and we saw an opportunity to showcase the strengths of our solution. We submitted our ultrasonic microbubble advanced oxidation process (AOP) solution, designed to remove toxic, persistent pollutants like PFAS. And in July, we received exciting news that out of 500 startup solutions, FUST Lab was selected for the next stage. This involved an in-depth evaluation, where we answered detailed questions from AstraZeneca about the feasibility and scalability of our technology. By September, we received even better news: FUST Lab had been chosen as one of the top three finalists. With this, we were invited to the Industrial Future Summit for a face-to-face meeting with AstraZeneca’s team—Magnus R. Björsne, PhD, MBA, Assoc. Prof., Alexander Kvist, Joakim von Euler-Chelpin Finally, in October, our team—myself, our CTO Seonae Hwangbo, and our BD manager Caroline Jang—traveled to Stockholm. We presented our solution and held detailed discussions on collaboration. This was a pivotal moment for us as we looked to expand our technology’s applications from PFAS to pharmaceutical wastewater. We’re excited about the road ahead and the potential for a deeper collaboration with AstraZeneca for carbon reduction. --- 2024년을 마무리하며 퍼스트랩에게 가장 기억에 남는 프로젝트를 나누고 싶습니다. 지난 10월, 스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 아스트라제네카를 만나 퍼스트랩의 초음파 마이크로버블 고도산화공정(AOP) 기술을 소개하고, 2025년 초 파일럿 프로젝트를 진행하기로 합의했습니다. 이 여정은 올해 5월, Combient Foundry로부터 시작됐습니다. 아스트라제네카가 지속 가능성 목표를 위해 새로운 의약품 폐수 처리 기술을 찾고 있다는 소식을 듣고, PFAS 같은 유독성 오염 물질을 소각 없이 처리할 수 있는 기술을 제안하게 됐습니다. 이후 두 차례 심사를 거쳐 500개 기업 중 최종 3개 기업에 선정되는 기쁜 소식을 들었습니다. 10월에는 스톡홀름에서 열린 Industrial Future Summit에 초청받아 아스트라제네카와 직접 기술을 발표하고 협업을 위한 논의를 진행하였습니다. 이번 프로젝트는 퍼스트랩이 PFAS를 넘어 의약품 폐수까지 기술 적용 범위를 넓히는 중요한 발판이 되었고, 아스트라제네카와 협력해 글로벌 환경 문제 해결 및 탄소저감에 한 발 더 다가설 수 있는 기회가 될 것이라고 생각합니다.
