The Environmental Impact of Zama Zama Mining in South Africa Recent media attention on Stilfontein's Zama Zama miners highlight the safety, rights, security, societal, and economic issues associated with these illegal activities. However, environmental impacts are also realised and often forgotten. These include uncontrolled impacts such as toxic chemicals, waste and pollution, surface collapse and destruction of stabilised rehabilitation and closure infrastructure already in place. Illegal mining by Zama Zamas is extensive and results in an estimated R21 billion annual loss in sales, taxes, and royalties in South Africa alone (Martin, 2024). With >6,000 abandoned mines in various commodities, closure liability and environmental degradation are already an issue. The infiltration into these areas by Zama Zamas, as well as the illegal re-opening of legitimately rehabilitated mines, only furthers the impact on the environment, making the efforts of rehabilitation a dangerous and challenging task with the environment often taking the ultimate hit. Sustainable mining practices necessitate a collaborative effort between government, companies, and local communities to protect the environment we live in and support the livelihoods of those involved in the industry. Well planned, inclusive and concurrent rehabilitation, pollution control and sound socio-economic closure practices are a good first step in mitigating this risk, but more needs to be done to ensure the long-term environmental impacts of mining are not re-opened by illegal activities. The MSA Group is dedicated to promoting and consulting on sustainable mining, rehabilitation and closure practices, addressing environmental challenges and considering illegal activities as a contextual aspect of closure. It is only by working together that we can innovatively create a more sustainable future for the mining industry, the communities it serves and future generations. #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainableMining #ZamaZama #SouthAfrica #TheMSAGroup #WeAreMSA #MineClosure #Rehabilitation Ref: Martin, A. Part 1: Water Risk and Security of Supply When looking at our water issues today it is important to remember that much of today’s water infrastructure was designed for now outdated contexts and functions. In economic sectors like mining, industry, agriculture and public services, the decades-old systems often fail to address modern challenges such as social expectations, quality, increased demand and climatic risks (variability). Understanding your business's exposure to water risks and ensuring a secure supply is no longer just compliance—it’s essential for long-term success. When last did your business critically evaluate its water sources and dependencies? Have you considered the interrelated risks that could impact your operations? In our experience, while many businesses address physical and engineered water risks, very few manage the broader and interconnected challenges that can form the bulk of the issue. MSA offers comprehensive integrated water risk and management solutions, providing a holistic perspective on water security for the mining, industrial and agricultural sectors tailored to your needs. Contact us to learn how we can help your business manage its water resources sustainably. #WeAreMSA #Water #Risk #SustainableDevelopment #WaterEfficiency #WaterManagement #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #SustainableDesign

The MSA Group’s Dr Guy Freemantle recently paid a visit to surficial type #uranium deposits in the Erongo Region #Namibia. These deposits represent a substantial portion of the Nation’s uranium resources and are presently being mined at Paladin Energy’s Langer Heinrich Mine, with other large deposits of this type due to start producing in the coming years. Surficial deposits are close to surface, with U predominantly hosted in distinctly yellow carnotite in the matrix of consolidated gravels that occupy palaeochannels in the #Namib desert. They are thin deposits but laterally extensive and continuous over several kilometres. #WeAreMSA, #Mining, #Exploration, #Carnotite
