  • How does SA’s debt compare with the rest of the world? SA ranks 12th among the most indebted emerging markets, up from 16th place a decade ago, according to the Q2 2024 Global Debt Monitor and Frontier Markets Debt Monitor. Government debt has risen from 42% of GDP in 2014 to 75% in 2024, without substantial investment in productive assets. This is of concern given the country’s need for infrastructure development. Meanwhile, the non-financial corporate sector has reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio. Public-private partnerships are crucial to unlocking SA’s infrastructure development, driving growth, and boosting business confidence. • Financial markets, from the US to Europe, Asia and SA, took direction last week from continuing strength in the US economy and the prospect of further rate cuts, rather than political upheavals in France and South Korea. In SA, the rand firmed by 1.5% against the dollar in the year to date, making it one of the better-performing emerging market currencies. However, Q3 GDP data showed a surprising 0.3% q/q decline, mostly because of a substantial fall in agricultural output. In a recent webinar, our Deputy Head of Fixed Income, Sylvester Kobo, and Head of Credit, Tarryn Sankar CFA, CA(SA), explored the outlook for fixed income in a rate-cutting environment and the positioning and performance of the STANLIB Flexible Income Fund. Over the long term, the fund has delivered solid double-digit returns and has compellingly outpaced inflation and the benchmark in a tough market in the 12 months to September 2024. While falling interest rates are generally negative for yields, the STANLIB Flexible Income Fund can take on more duration and lock in higher yields in anticipation of interest rate cuts. Now might be a good time to consider moving up the risk curve to a multi-asset income fund. Last week, the S&P 500 drew encouragement from US President-Elect Donald Trump’s choice of Treasury Secretary, as well as the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement. US consumer confidence remains well above the threshold level that warns of impending inflation. In SA, the fifth consecutive monthly decline in the PPI was recorded, largely due to lower fuel prices. In Europe, consumer inflation accelerated for the second consecutive month, but this is not expected to derail a 25bps interest rate cut later this month. Key markets recovered some ground last week from their negative post-election reaction to the sweeping Republican Party win in the US, but Bitcoin outpaced the broader market with a 10% gain. The S&P 500 recorded a weekly gain of 1.7% and remained below recent record highs. October inflation in SA beat market expectations, falling to 2.8% y/y from 3.8% in September. Meanwhile, rising energy costs in the UK pushed the country’s October inflation rate up to 2.3% y/y from 1.7% previously. In Japan, inflation remained above the central bank’s target at 2.3%. It’s been almost one year since we launched the STANLIB Corporate Enhanced Yield Fund, and we’re excited to announce the fund has already surpassed R5 billion in assets under management! This early success speaks to the value that corporate SA sees in longer-dated money market maturities, and the appeal of holding value for longer in a downward interest rate environment. Thank you to our corporate clients for their support, and to STANLIB’s dedicated investment and distribution teams whose hard work and expertise have been pivotal in reaching this milestone. We need to not only take the plunge, but also navigate the 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 and 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 AI in this process. I share my lessons in my year of working on a generative AI investment research tool here: https://lnkd.in/dZQJefJQ Gen AI has suffered some C-Suite overhype, but I feel futurist Roy Amara was right: “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.”

This past week, markets reacted negatively to the US election. The S&P 500, STOXX Europe 600, Nikkei 225, and JSE All-Share Index ended the week lower due to various concerns about the potential impact of President-Elect Donald Trump’s policy changes. Locally, the rand was the worst-performing emerging market currency, losing 3.7% against the dollar, although it was supported by the S&P credit rating outlook upgrade.
