  • Crypto currency is probably one of the most controversial "assets" in modern history. I thought I'd write up a post to show the pros and cons of Bitcoin and what to look out for if you want to own it Pros: 1) Inflation/Currency Hedge: the most popular reason to hold bitcoin is that it can provide a hedge against inflation. It has a limited supply and is capped at around 21 million bitcoin 2) Diversification: crypto currency (bitcoin in particular) is considered its own asset class and therefore can have low correlation with traditional assets such as equities and bonds 3) Decentralized: Bitcoin isn't controlled by any middle men or by the central banks. it is therefore considered to be "safe" from being affected by government control Cons 1) Volatility and Risk: Bitcoin prices can rise and fall drastically (it is up around 100% over the past 1 year but is down 20% over the past 3 months) 2) No Intrinsic Value: Bitcoin is not a physical asset and does not produce any sort of physical return 3) Speculative: We have no way of knowing where Bitcoin will be over time (which can be true for most assets) Some things to consider if you want to hold Bitcoin in your portfolio 1) Rand Cost Average: buy consistently over a period of time to make use of the price fluctuations 2) Not more than 10% of your portfolio should be Crypto currency due to its volatility (this is especially true for people close to or in retirement) 3) You must be emotionally prepared to lose 20% or more of your investment at any point in time (which has happened to Bitcoin multiple times) 4) Understand and always remember why you want to hold Bitcoin, especially in times of down cycles #bitcoin #crypto #investments
