📢 From global connectivity disruption and catastrophic cybersecurity breaches, to acquisitions, new legislation and positive market growth – 2024 was a big year for IoT news headlines. We’ve summed up 5 of the biggest and added a bonus feel-good story too. Read on for more. ⬇️ ⛓️💥 Severed undersea cables and major network outages halted global communications This year, several connectivity interruptions made international headlines. Big hitters included a major AT&T outage in February (the biggest we’ve seen in years), damage to subsea cables along the east coast of Africa in February and again in May, and another four subsea cables along the west coast of Africa in March. (Avoidable, we’d like to note, if you employ an IoT connectivity solution like our eUICC SIM card, FlexiSIM.) And let’s not forget the now-infamous CrowdStrike incident on 19 July, when a faulty software update caused a massive IT outage and widespread system crashes that quite literally stopped companies from operating. The outage is estimated to have cost Fortune 500 companies upwards of $5.4 billion in direct financial losses. Whoops is an understatement. 😶 ➡️ With a resilient connectivity solution, disruptions like this can be avoided. Check out our SIM solutions here: https://lnkd.in/gDtCkXNJ 💯 Connected IoT devices grew by 13% globally This year we saw a surge in global IoT device growth, with experts predicting that by end 2024, connected IoT devices will number 13% more than they did in 2023. There were approximately 16.6 billion connected IoT devices by the end of 2023. Factoring in the 13% growth, we should have 18.8 billion by the end of the year. It's clear proof of the quickening rate of IoT tech adoption across industries, use cases and geographies. We say: bring it on! 💪🏼 ➡️ IoT device growth is good news for everybody. 🌍 Our team was in Cape Town last week for #AfricaTechFestival2024, the world’s largest gathering of Africa-focused connectivity leaders. We loved engaging with other industry leaders, catching up with old friends and digging into the details with new ones. 🙌🏼 We were lucky enough to also host a spectacular sunset catamaran cruise around Cape Town. ⛵ What an incredible celebration of our collective achievements of 2024, shared with some of our clients and suppliers! It reminded us of the power of personal interaction. AfricaCom is a fantastic opportunity to learn, and hearing first-hand the various challenges when it comes to enterprise IoT connectivity was illuminating. Here are a few that stood out to us: ➡️ Companies continue to seek out resilient solutions and systems that simplify connectivity management. ➡️ Security remains a key concern, with a keen focus on endpoint security, as well as ensuring network security is regularly tested and air-tight, particularly as AI adoption ramps up. ➡️ The confluence of IoT and AI was a hot topic, and we’re seeing a lot of innovation in this space. ➡️ While there is increased investment in deploying networks in Africa, 5G adoption remains low, and most regions remain reliant on 2G and 3G for consumer and enterprise services. An IoT connectivity solution like FlexiSIM, our intelligent network switching SIM, would be transformative for these markets. Learn more about FlexiSIM here: https://hubs.ly/Q02Z0tJS0 It was an invigorating week and we’re so excited to be involved in accelerating Africa’s digital journey! Enjoy our reel of highlights from the cruise and we hope to see you next year at #AfricaCom! #AfricaTechFestival #AfricaCom #IoT #IoTConnectivity #ConnectivitySolutions #EnterpriseConnectivity

Curious about how devices communicate in the Internet of Things (IoT)? Let’s break down two important technologies: NB-IoT and LTE-M. Here’s what you need to know. ⬇️ NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) and LTE-M (LTE for Machine Type Communications) both belong to the family of LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies, which are designed for efficient, long-range communication. 👍🏼 Think of NB-IoT as a specialised network designed for low power usage. It’s excellent for devices that don’t need to send a lot of data very often, like smart meters that measure electricity usage or sensors in agriculture. A more versatile network, LTE-M supports higher data transfers. It’s suitable for applications where devices might need to communicate more frequently or require faster responses, such as in vehicle tracking or wearable tech. ⌛ If you need quick updates, LTE-M might be your go-to. LTE-M can send data faster (up to 1 Mbps) than NB-IoT (up to 250 kbps). ⏱️ LTE-M typically has a quicker response time too, making it better for applications that need instant feedback, whereas NB-IoT is better suited to tasks that don’t require immediate action. 🚗 LTE-M supports moving devices, such as cars, drones, or emergency services vehicles, whereas NB-IoT is ideal for stationary devices. 🔋 If you’re playing the long game, NB-IoT shines when it comes to battery efficiency, allowing devices to run for years without needing a recharge. This makes it a good option for remote installations. Ultimately, both NB-IoT and LTE-M can support a huge number of devices and work well together in existing cellular networks. When selecting one over the other, let your needs dictate, taking into account data speed, response times, and how often your devices need to communicate. Ready for more?
