Happy New Year! If you’re looking to make 2025 the year that you follow through on your New Year’s resolution to get or stay healthy, consider adopting a scientific approach. Studies suggest that a significant proportion of New Year’s resolutions are health-related, and as many as 80% are abandoned by mid-February. Some ideas on how to stay the course: 1. Work with your doctor to set a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based) goal around your health. This is important because an unrealistic goal can be unachievable and demoralising 2. Link your goal to a metric that can be tracked daily so that it stays top of mind. For instance, at Infinity Medical Concierge, we use proprietary technology to proactively monitor your health. This means that your health is not forgotten even when life becomes hectic. 3. Build in accountability. We have found that regular, proactive visits with your physician, particularly as you embark on your resolution, can be a powerful motivator, especially if your goal involves weight loss or giving up an unhealthy habit such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption 4. Resolve to keep trying through the slip-ups. Taking a short walk because you didn’t make it to the gym is better than having no exercise at all. Remembering to have one of your five servings of fruits and vegetables is better than none Here is a great piece in The Conversation about setting SMART resolutions: https://brnw.ch/21wPKm3 #HappyNewYear #2025Goals #ProactiveHealthcare #HealthWealth

If you’re planning a day outdoors today, don’t forget your sun protection. South Africans are estimated to experience an average of 2 500 hours of sunshine a year, but the country has no formal guidelines around sun protection. Last year, a group of dermatologists and researchers published the first-known integrated sun-protection advice for South Africa’s multi-ethnic population. A holiday is about more than just rest. Here’s a good reminder in the Harvard Business Review about how vital a break is to your health. “In a study of 749 women, researchers found that those who took vacation less than once every six years were eight times more likely to develop heart problems compared to those who went on vacation twice a year. “Going on vacation can also lower your chances of dying from coronary heart disease, including lower blood sugar levels and improved HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol levels.” Read the full piece here: https://brnw.ch/21wPw0B #ProactiveHealth #HealthWealth

As you prepare for your holiday feast, put this item at the top of your list: food safety. Cases of food poisoning typically rise during the festive season as people prepare larger quantities of food, which can spoil in warmer weather. Improperly cooked or stored food can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria. You can limit the risk by controlling these three factors: ✔️ Temperature. Bacteria will grow more rapidly in food that is between 4°C and 60°C ✔️Moisture. There is a greater risk of bacteria growing in food that has a higher water content, especially if it has been sitting at room temperature ✔️Time. The longer food is left at room temperature, the greater the risk of bacterial growth If you’re an Infinity Medical Concierge member, contact the concierge desk if you’re concerned about health symptoms this festive season. “In a recent study, investigating the relationship between seasonal food purchases and weight gain, it was found that half the annual weight gain in South Africans occurred over the holiday season.” Staying active and mindful this festive season can help you enjoy the holidays without paying a price for overindulgence.
