About us
One-third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while more than 30 million people are food insecure. Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA recovers edible surplus food from the food supply chain - farmers, manufacturers, retailers and the hospitality sector - and distributes it to vetted beneficiary organisations, thus, connecting a world of excess to a world of need. In partnership with various stakeholders, we implement an ecosystem that uses surplus food as a catalyst for social change, transforming a food waste problem into a food security solution. Our innovative model promotes 11 of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).

Reducing food waste this festive season 🍖🍗 This festive season let's take action to reduce food waste and make a difference! Here are some simple, effective tips: 🥗Plan your meals: Think ahead to avoid overbuying and wasting food. 🥗Understand food labels: “Best before” doesn’t mean “throw-away” – use it before it’s wasted. 🥗Store food properly: Keep perishables fresh for longer. 🥗Donate excess food: Share surplus with neighbours or local food banks. 🌱Compost organic waste: Turn fruit and veggie scraps into garden gold. By reducing food waste, we can fight food insecurity and help tackle the climate crisis. Together, we can make this festive season about sharing, giving, and caring for the planet. 💚 Donate👉 https://lnkd.in/dztPFiD #FoodWasteAwareness #SaveFood #ReduceWaste #FoodForwardSA #FightingHunger #SustainableFestivities

Fighting Hunger & Saving the Planet! This year, we’ve saved 86,102,055 tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions through our food recovery efforts! Our food banking model helps fight food insecurity and plays a key role in reducing environmental impact. We’re excited to share that FoodForward SA has been selected as one of six countries to participate in a groundbreaking study with The Global FoodBanking Network and the Global Methane Hub. The study will track how food recovery reduces methane emissions, by diverting organic waste from landfills, a significant climate mitigation strategy. Together, we’re helping both people and the planet! #FoodForwardSA #FoodRecovery #ClimateAction #Sustainability #FightingHunger #SavingThePlanet

Jam for Impact: Turning Surplus Into Nourishment We’re tackling food insecurity and malnutrition head-on with an innovative solution! We received a generous donation of 149 drums of fruit puree (due to overproduction) that would have otherwise been wasted. Instead of letting this valuable resource go to landfills, we’re transforming it into 39,000 jars of delicious fruit jam, which will be distributed to our beneficiary organisations. This project not only provides a nutritious food source but also promotes circularity in the food system, reducing food waste, lowering methane emissions by 184.73 tonnes, and increasing food access for underserved communities. 🍞💚 Together, we’re creating a more sustainable and nourished future. 🙌💪

🌱Today, we had the pleasure of handing over certificates to the beneficiary organisations (BOs) who began their Food Gardens Connect training just 6 weeks ago. With the guidance of our Community Liaison Officer, Likopo 'DK' Sehlabo, these BOs are now ready to grow fresh produce just in time for the holiday season, continuing to serve their communities with healthy, home-grown food. Congratulations to BOs, Mothers Unite, Sinethemba, Siyakatala, and Joyce Ndinise on reaching this amazing milestone! 🎊 We can’t wait to see the positive impact they will have. 🌿 👉 If you're interested in learning more about our work or how you can get involved, drop us a message or visit our website at https://lnkd.in/daNY7wRe and let’s continue to grow together. #FoodGardensConnect #CommunityImpact #GrowTogether #FoodForwardSA
