Survivorship bias always gets us thinking. Discernment asks what the data isn't telling you. What's not staring you in the face? The damaged portions of returning Allied planes in WWII revealed locations where they planes could sustain damage and still return home; those hit in other places presumedly did not survive. The data just showed areas which were being "targeted" and might need reinforcing. Rather, it was the gaps in the data that spoke of the planes which did not return.
