Presentamos una reconstrucción virtual de la cuarta y última versión del Castillo de San Lorenzo el Real de Chagres, hoy en pie. Levantado durante la década de 1760 y diseñado por el ingeniero Manuel Hernández, autor de otros edificios emblemáticos de Panamá como las fortalezas y aduana de Portobelo y el Palacio de las Garzas. Este nuevo castillo cerró todo el acantilado dentro de una sola fortaleza, cubriendo con enormes rellenos los restos de sus versiones anteriores, salvo el foso frente al hornabeque, que es el mismo desde la década de 1650. Estos rellenos posiblemente salieron de la demolición de la mitad del cerro donde hoy está la batería externa y con ellos se creó el patio de armas, el foso norte, la luneta y el glacis. Este último enterró los restos del antiguo pueblo de Chagres bajo 4 m de sedimentos y el poblado se tuvo que mudar hacia donde hoy está el centro de visitantes y eventualmente hacia la playa. Durante gran parte del siglo XIX el castillo sirvió como prisión. Fue abandonado en la década de 1850. El castillo vio acción por última vez en 1851 durante enfrentamientos entre chagreños y los residentes de Yankee Chagres, al otro lado de la boca del río. Los primeros bombardearon el poblado extranjero con la artillería abandonada en la fortaleza, por una disputa por los derechos de transbordar pasajeros desde los buques hacia la costa durante la marejada de viajeros de la Fiebre del Oro. Los incidentes se saldaron con decenas de muertos y heridos de ambos bandos y fueron resueltos por un acuerdo diplomático entre la Nueva Granada y los Estados Unidos. Gina Della Togna, Ph.D. Togna is setting the amphibian conservation world alight. She serves as the Executive Director of the Amphibian Survival Alliance, a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), and is a member of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund Advisory Board.   Recently, the MBZ Fund awarded its prestigious Dolphin Energy Chairman's Award to a critical project focused on the Critically Endangered Axolotl. We sat down with Gina to learn more about her lifelong passion for these incredible creatures and what made this initiative so impactful.   Gina's unwavering dedication to amphibian conservation, even in the face of stereotypes, has inspired countless others to join the fight.
