Advancing understanding. Improving lives.
About us
Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province. Waypoint’s 1,300+ staff improve lives and bring hope to people with mental illness and substance use issues. The care we deliver on site, in the community and through partnerships is informed by our innovative practices and – importantly – patient voices. We are sponsored by the Catholic Health Sponsors of Ontario. Each patient’s journey is unique, and we support their recovery with compassion, dignity and inclusivity. Waypoint staff are internationally recognized for their leadership and research, which they approach with professionalism and humility. This dedication deepens understanding of mental health and addiction, and helps to build a better future for patients, their families and care partners, staff, the community and the health care system.

This year, Waypoint began one of the largest and most complex initiatives by implementing The Model of Care with Six Core Strategies project. After launching on two units in March, it has since gone live on all of our high-secure forensic mental health care programs. Hundreds of staff have participated in training and patient care is being transformed. This has been well received by patients and staff alike — a huge achievement that required the contributions of many team members. To learn more about our work, visit: https://bit.ly/3XdZKBO

This summer, members of the Spiritual Care Team constructed a sweat lodge in the Spiritual Care Courtyard. Waypoint was the first Ontario hospital to have a sweat lodge, and we’ve been thrilled to reinstitute this after the pandemic, as it provides patients access to a form of therapy based on the sacred values, beliefs and traditions of Indigenous peoples. Waypoint’s North Simcoe Muskoka Specialized Geriatric Services is leading the Behaviour Success Agent program in partnership with hospitals across the region. This program supports hospitalized older adults with dementia and behaviours, the program is enabling them to return to their homes sooner. In addition, Dr. Katie Bingham has received a three-year $750,000 CIHR grant to study the impact of the program, with an eye toward expanding it to other hospitals. We began construction in July on a new 20-bed inpatient unit that will address the growing need for specialized mental health and addiction care throughout Simcoe Muskoka and the surrounding area. It will also include the first psychiatric ICU beds in Central Ontario, making care safer for those with the most severe illnesses. Together with leading the launch of a new digital system to manage bed access and flow collaboratively, this enables us to support the emergency departments of eight hospitals. Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care reposted this
Yesterday, Rob Desroches and I had such a blast connecting with staff all across our main campus (and bringing some goodies) to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of 2024 and thank everyone for their contributions, including and especially everyone working during the holidays. A few moments and reflections from this very moving experience: - many staff who are working on Christmas and Hanukkah choose to do so in order to support other team members to spend time with their families - such a beautiful way of caring for each other - new members of the Waypoint team spoke about the warm Waypoint welcome they have received from colleagues and the meaningfulness of their work here - there is a growing recognition of how EVERYONE’S contributions make amazing things happen around here For example, to name just a few ‘behind the scenes’: - the materials management / central stores team have been integral to supporting the renovations for our new 20 bed acute mental health unit, as well as our new rTMS neurostimulation treatment program - data analytics is a rapidly growing team whose contributions include supporting innovative integrated care models Waypoint is leading with partners across the region (such as North Simcoe Muskoka Specialized Geriatric Services) - housekeeping staff regularly connect with patients with compassion that helps combat stigma and promote recovery - as the administrator on call for the holidays I know how vital the staffing office and central intake teams are to supporting patient care and access and flow of patients across the region - the recreation team and food services team have thoughtfully brought patients and staff together in holiday cheer with a variety show, caroling, gingerbread house competition, and delicious turkey meal There is so much more… but to bring this essay to a close, for now I’ll just say I’m so grateful and humbled to be at the helm of such a remarkable organization… filled with talented and passionate people who bring their expertise, compassion and teamwork in service to our patients and in support of each other in this challenging and meaningful work. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
We wish you a joyous Christmas filled with peace, love and hope. A special thank you to the members of our team who are caring for our patients this holiday season.
