What would it take to restore the world's forests? It's a question that demands us to think not just about the trees, but about the people who grow them. The land stewarded by smallholder farmers collectively represents one of the biggest opportunities to restore the world’s forests, but farmers often face barriers to make land-use choices in favour of growing trees. Taking Root works with farmers to remove those barriers so that growing trees improves their livelihoods. The result is lasting impacts for the benefit of climate, nature, and people. Watch our latest video to learn more about how we're successfully restoring the world's forests in partnership with smallholder farmers. #ForestRestoration #NatureBasedSolutions #CarbonRemovals #SmallholderFarmers Pachamama Film

About us
Taking Root’s purpose is to accelerate the restoration of the world’s forests. We enable smallholder farmers to grow trees and earn money from the carbon they remove from the atmosphere. Our technology and support make it simple for our reforestation partners to create transparent and robust forest carbon removals. From registering farmers and recruiting land, to monitoring trees grown and the carbon stored over time, we provide the tools at every step of the way to help our partners successfully manage and scale their carbon projects. Recognized for its best practices by the UN, EU, and World Economic Forum, Taking Root is connecting thousands of farmers to the carbon market, improving their livelihoods by restoring forests around the world. Please note that Taking Root's technology platform was formerly called FARM-TRACE. This name was dropped in April 2022 when Taking Root rebranded, which included integrating the technology platform into its identity. FARM-TRACE is now referred to as Taking Root’s technology platform.

From participant to advocate! Juan Ángel Valdivia recently joined CommuniTree and is now inspiring others by sharing his journey—what it’s like to be part of the program and how reforesting his land is already making a difference. Word of mouth is a powerful driver for CommuniTree. By sharing firsthand stories, participants like Juan help other farmers see the possibilities that come with restoring their land. #Reforestation #SustainableFarming #CarbonRemoval #CommuniTree

"Restoring forests on private lands isn’t just good for the world, it’s good for entire communities." Words from our partners at Arbor Day Foundation, long-time supporters of the CommuniTree Carbon Program in Nicaragua. With farmers retaining full ownership of their land and the trees they grow, and receiving equitable revenue shares, our approach offers an inclusive, scalable and resilient model for nature restoration to deliver a sustainable future for communities and the planet. #ClimateAction #CarbonRemovals #SmallholderFarmers
Reforestation doesn’t just happen in forests. It happens on family farms, too. In Somoto, Nicaragua, our partner Taking Root is providing financial incentives for landowners like Esther Estrada Espinoza and her husband Martín to plant trees on their farm. These trees help out on a big scale. ⛅️Absorbing carbon to slow climate change 💧Cleaning and protecting the region’s water 🌲Increasing the biodiversity of the species and age of the region’s trees And on an individual level, these trees help farmers, their families, and their communities. 💰Providing agricultural products as a source of income ✅Creating job opportunities for producers, laborers, and farmers 🌱Revitalizing soil on land historically used for other types of agriculture Restoring forests on private lands isn’t just good for the world, it’s good for entire communities.

🌍 Happy World Soil Day! 🌱 Did you know that restoring forests helps to improve soil quality? This is important because: 1️⃣ Soil supports biodiversity: One teaspoon of soil can contain more microorganisms than people on Earth! 🐛 2️⃣ Soil stores carbon: Healthy soil stores carbon, making it a powerful ally in the fight against climate change. 🌎 3️⃣ Soil filters and cleans water: Soil plays an important role in the hydrologic cycle. 💧 4️⃣ Tree roots improve soil structure: This reduces nutrient loss by limiting leaching, erosion, and runoff. 🌳 5️⃣ Healthy soil creates healthy plants: Making plants less vulnerable to pests and disease. 🌾 #WorldSoilDay #HealthySoil #ForestRestoration #ClimateAction

An example of a silvopastoral agroforestry system in action! On Fernando's farm in Nicaragua, native tree species have been integrated with pastures. This boosts livestock productivity by improving forage quality, reducing heat stress, and enhancing milk and meat yields—all while strengthening farm resilience. Silvopastoral planting is one of the planting designs available through CommuniTree, helping farmers improve their livelihoods by growing trees alongside their existing agricultural practices. #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity #CommunityImpact #ClimateResilience
