How does change happen? Gradually, then all at once. With an early-stage business, change often feels like something we must push for. But sometimes, the world feels ready—and this week, I felt progress was happening everywhere: 💼 The Ontario government proposed a new 16-week leave for parents growing their families through adoption or surrogacy. Huge thanks to Cindy Wasser, Baden Colt, and Zane Colt for your tireless advocacy! A great summary by Chris Hannay is linked below. 🎥 Netflix released JOY: The Birth of IVF, a moving portrayal of the scientists who developed IVF in the 1970s. This film captured the stress, hope, and resilience of navigating fertility treatments. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen this year and definitely the one that made me cry the most! 🌱 At the HRPA - Human Resources Professionals Association Summit, I had the opportunity to share Sprout Family’s mission with some new connections. I was so moved by the number of attendees who opened up about their own family-building journeys. Thank you, Jodi Kovitz and team, for a great event and for fostering such a safe, supportive space for these conversations. It’s truly motivating to see the broader public embracing the many diverse paths to building a family. 🫶

What an incredible day at the Femtech Canada event in Montreal, all centered around women’s health in Canada—a topic I could talk about endlessly 💙 Big kudos to Rachel Bartholomew, Andrea Guest, Hannah Fritchley and the rest of the FemTech Canada team for putting together such a thoughtful and inspiring day. The intentionality in how you structured the event showed and made every moment impactful. Thank you for spotlighting our founder journeys (Danika Kelly, Sara Jonsdottir, Swati Matta)! Liza Vityuk - the work your team at McKinsey is doing to uncover and share such compelling data about the women’s health gap is exceptional. It’s the foundation we need to really start moving the needle forward. Check out the report here - it’s pretty chilling: https://lnkd.in/gtx2jwtx We are starting to see serious change happening at the research, R&D and policy levels to investigate and create solutions that will truly provide life changing benefits to women around the globe (Parambir Bhangu & Genevieve Lavertu) I’m feeling energized and optimistic—the best is yet to come! 🚀

Feeling energized after attending the Empire Club of Canada's The Future of Fertility event yesterday. The discussions between patients, industry leaders, and fertility doctors highlighted a crucial need: better workplace benefits for those on fertility and family-building journeys. Thank you Zane Colt, Dr. Meivys Garcia and Maya Khurana for sharing your stories and the work you are doing. Infertility patients face significant challenges without workplace benefits. Here’s why: - Discreetly administering injections in office bathrooms - Receiving devastating news about failed transfers while at work - Struggling with miscarriages in silence - Juggling numerous medical appointments with work commitments - Experiencing substantial financial strain from out-of-pocket treatment costs (often exceeding $20,000) The current landscape is concerning: - Only 5% of Canadian companies provide financial benefits covering fertility treatment costs (HRReporter) - 53% of Canadian companies DON’T even cover fertility drugs, which can cost upwards of $5,000 per IVF cycle (Mapol Inc.) - 56% of employees report decreased job satisfaction due to fertility challenges (Fertility Network UK) - 38% have seriously considered leaving their job because of fertility struggles (Fertility Network UK) Public funding is a start, but workplace benefits are essential to supplement. At Sprout, we're committed to making family-building accessible across Canada. Change begins with open dialogue and action. Employers: It's time to step up. Offer comprehensive fertility benefits. Create a supportive environment for your employers, I promise you will see the benefit in terms of attraction, retention and well-being.

Today marks a significant milestone in enhancing access to fertility care in Canada! The Ontario government has announced the expansion of the Ontario Fertility Program, with key goals to:  • Increase access to care for individuals and families • Reduce wait times • Broaden coverage This expansion is a testament to the relentless advocacy of organizations like Conceivable Dreams and Fertility Matters Canada, who are dedicated to improving fertility care access. While this is a significant step forward, there's still much more to be done. Comprehensive coverage that reflects the realities of fertility journeys is essential. Patients still face challenges like the high costs of multiple IVF cycles, limited employer benefits coverage, and a complex system to navigate. Ontario's progress highlights the need for nationwide action. As Ontario advances, other provinces must follow suit to ensure equitable access across Canada. Thank you, MPP Christine Hogarth for your leadership, and to all the advocates, medical professionals, and policymakers who made this happen.

One year ago, Suzanne and I set out on a mission to address the lack of accessible family-building support that Canadian's desperately need. This problem is deeply personal to me and my family. I hope our story encourages more open conversations about the different pathways to parenthood and how we can better support each other along the way. Thankful for my incredible family and the journey that got us here. ❤️ https://lnkd.in/g3t7Mc7P

Employer-provided healthcare coverage often fails to address fundamental aspects of family planning, such as fertility treatments and related health issues. Fertility, a foundational part for many, remains inadequately covered, leaving a significant gap in accessible family-planning resources. While some employers offer support for infertility treatments like IVF and egg freezing, many individuals lack access to these vital services. It's important to recognize that comprehensive fertility coverage extends beyond facilitating pregnancy; it also addresses health concerns such as PCOS, irregular menstruation, and diabetes. Thus, bridging this coverage gap is crucial for promoting both family-building and overall health. Our friends Sprout Family are trying to change Canadian fertility benefits for the better.
