Scaffold provides full-on training in the art and science of building your game business.

About us

WHO WE ARE: We have built and grown game studios with products ranging from PC to console to mobile, from VR to AR to the N-Gage. …yes, even the N-Gage. We’ve had hits, we’ve had misses, we’ve had big moments and small, and we’ve enjoyed the thrill that come with the launch of each game. And that means we know just how important those first months of strategy and planning can be. The difference between super success and ignominious failure is often decided in the very earliest stages of building your business… not your game. WHAT WE DO: Scaffold provides full-on training in the art and science of building your game business, always with a laser focus on what the market is buying, what investors are funding, and where the technical curve is likely to bend. We are at our best when working side-by-side with passionate founders who are taking their first or (ideally) second swing at creating a game-changing game business. You know your game better than anyone else, but the best business might be a bit more of a mystery. That’s where we come in! We provide the business scaffolding that will unlock the right kind of opportunity just when your company needs it the most. HOW WE DO IT WE APPROACH THE BUSINESS OF GAMES A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY Unlike some other accelerators, we aren’t going to grab a big chunk of equity for helping you polish your pitch deck. Instead the team at Scaffold Games works alongside you and your crew to help push the business side of your game to the next level. Maybe it’s negotiating the right deal with the right publisher. Maybe it’s optimizing the alphabet soup of tax credits (SR&ED, IDMTC, etc). Maybe it’s grabbing a chunk of non-dilutive financing via programs like the Canada Media Fund. Maybe it’s filing for a patent for something uber-cool. Maybe it’s none of these… but our goal is to work with our partners to structure the best long-term financing solutions for your company.

I'm sure a lot of people on my network have seen the news in recent weeks about the layoffs at Inflexion games and Humanoid Origin. This is especially hard pill to swallow because its happened in Edmonton. So at Scaffold we've decided to create a cohort exclusively for the local devs that have been laid off at these studios. This program is built to harness the incredible skills, knowledge, and experience you already have, and channel them into creating your own successful game studio. Supported by provincial and federal funding, we’re here to help you take control of your career and turn this transition into a launchpad for something amazing. Here’s what we offer: - Mentorship from seasoned industry professionals across the globe. - Strategic networking to connect you with investors, publishers and key collaborators. - Financing support to turn your studio vision into reality. Several companies from our earlier cohorts are already seeing significant success, and we’re eager to support more talented developers in building something incredible. If you’re curious to learn more, check out our program brochure here and sign up for us to contact you next year: https://lnkd.in/g8CMPenU You can also reach out to me directly. Looking forward to hearing from all of you! #alberta #games

⁉️ What if VR gaming wasn’t just limited to those with the hardware? What if anyone, on any device, could join the experience?🤔 Cross-platform play is transforming how we think about gaming. By breaking barriers between VR and non-VR platforms, we’re making immersive, social experiences more accessible than ever. It’s not just about connecting devices—it’s about connecting people. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how cross-platform accessibility could define the future of VR gaming and the innovations needed to make it happen. From designing gameplay that works across platforms to ensuring no one is left out, this is a glimpse of what we’re building with MRDRBRS. 🔗 Link to the article is in the comments. ❓ What do you think about cross-platform play? Is it the key to making VR gaming more inclusive? #RedIronLabs #YYCTech #CrossPlatform #GameDev #GameDevJourney #VirtualRealityGames #MRDRBRS

Weekly Update! Our tongue-in-cheek approach to Roman polytheism is a meta/end-game system of unlockable passive buffs. We are designing these in a trading card format, and they are named after ancient Deities. They confer both positive AND negative buffs, because the ancient Deities were kind of mean like that. Our first concept is class Mars, God of War! Easy to understand and get behind. But our team is planning on fully flexing their humor and creativity with future Deity cards.

There is something truly liberating to being able to share the projects I’m working on as I work on them! Coming from AAA we’d be operating for years of “black box” development: - no way to share the passion for what we’re working on outside of the team - no way to get consumer/client/player facing feedback - just a hope and a prayer that the forces that influence the creative process are more intune with the market than we are… Well, the true beauty my friends, of working on projects you own all the creative rights to is there’s no one to sue me but me! And I’m feeling benevolent thus far, giving myself all the rope I need to -hopefully- prove my theory correct: In this age, it’s better to have a social media flub or two or six than to have no one know you’re building something they’re interested in.

🎤 Last night, I pitched MRDRBRS at the Indie Ignition Accelerator's pitch competition! One of the key points I shared was how our game doesn’t just focus on players—it’s built to entertain and engage audiences too. That’s what makes MRDRBRS stand out in the competitive gaming space. 🌟 If you’re curious about how audience engagement shapes our game design, I’ve written an article that dives into the research and thought behind it. 🔗 Link in comments for full article. #RedIronLabs #YYCTech #innovationweekyyc #GameDevJourney #VirtualRealityGames #MRDRBRS

It always feels nice being interviewed. ... especially when it's about local games and game development. Thank you to CBC News for the opportunity to talk, pitching tonight's amazing Calgary Game Developers Association event at Platform Calgary and to talk about the cool stuff we get to do at Red Iron Labs :) I may have also snuck in #scaffoldalberta and their free incubator for game studios as well as the Bow Valley College #ignite incubator Game development is awesome. https://lnkd.in/gfWd3Vry #vr #gamedev #media #innovationweek
