The Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) is the voice of Ontario’s rural municipalities, and the rural arm of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). ROMA is integral to AMO’s advocacy on behalf of Ontario’s municipalities, with executive members serving on AMO’s Board of directors. ROMA promotes, support and advocates for strong and effective rural governments, undertaking policy work on key priorities and hosting an annual conference. The conference, which grows ever year, brings together provincial and municipal leaders to learn, connect and advocate for solutions for a stronger rural Ontario.

A big welcome to the three newest participating members of the ONE Joint Investment Board. At our November board meeting we welcomed the Township of Central Frontenac, the Municipality of Clarington and the Municipality of Red Lake. Fifteen municipalities have now joined the first and only Joint Investment Board created by municipalities and for municipalities to help meet their strategic financial goals. Congratulations and thank you to staff at ONE Investment (AMO/MFOA) and at the three municipalities for all of their hard work to make this happen.

AMO is hopeful that legislation that will be tabled today by the Province will provide greater clarity on municipal enforcement related to homeless encampments while respecting important Charter rights. However, enforcement alone will not effectively address encampments. The 1,400 homeless encampments in Ontario today are the result of decades of provincial underinvestment in income security, mental health and addictions services, and deeply affordable housing.
