As we reflect on the past year, we are grateful for advances made in our mission to uphold the right to education for Afghan women and girls. Your support has been instrumental in driving this critical work forward, and we are deeply grateful. • To close 2024, we are honoured to share the inspiring voice of an Afghan girl named Somaya, currently living under Taliban rule.  This letter is read by Muzhda Akbari, Right to Learn Afghanistan youth advocate, founder of Code Green Afghanistan , and lead of the "Dear World" initiative (100 Actions for 100 Letters Campaign). To learn more about how you can support girls like Somaya, visit righttolearn.ca

  • We soon mark two heartbreaking years since the Taliban imposed a ban on women's higher education in Afghanistan — denying millions of young women their fundamental right to learn, achieve financial success, and contribute to society. We mark two years of lost dreams, worsening mental health, and increasing poverty. Our Higher Education Advocacy Toolkit is an empowering resource designed to support global action for Afghan women’s right to education. 🛠️ Access the Toolkit here: https://lnkd.in/gGJfd8nP Let’s amplify Afghan women’s voices and demand justice. Together, we can ensure their dreams are not forgotten.

I am so incredibly honored and happy to share that I have received the prestigious The Diana Award for my project, CodeGreenAfg , and my advocacy for girls’ education. This award is not just for me—it’s for all the girls I fight for, for my incredible team members, and for everyone who has supported me on this journey. I dedicate this award to the resilient women of Afghanistan, who continue to inspire me every day. Together, we share a mission to be catalysts for change, striving for freedom, equality, and opportunity for all. I’m also so excited to join the Diana Award Development Program next year and use this opportunity as a tool to amplify my advocacy work and be a voice for the women of Afghanistan. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has believed in me, supported me, and shared kind words along the way. It means the world to me, and I’m so grateful to have you all. A special thanks to Kimmy Coseteng and Right to Learn Afghanistan for nominating me for The Diana Award . 🩵🙌 #2024dianaawards

  • The Taliban have announced a law banning women from receiving medical training: one of the last few avenues of education that was permitted for women. What this means: ⚠️ Women will suffer without access to healthcare. Women in Afghanistan are not permitted to be treated by male doctors, so without new generations of female medical specialists being trained, countless Afghan women and girls will not have access to medical care. ⚠️More women and infants will die in childbirth. Female literacy and education rates are directly tied to infant and maternal mortality rates — a rate that is already dramatically increasing since the Taliban assumed control. According to the World Health Organization, Afghanistan has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world. Without trained female doctors and midwives, infant and maternal mortality will worsen ⚠️Women's mental health will decline. With one of the last avenues of education and employment closed to women and new restrictions being implemented weekly, the mental health of Afghan women is in steep decline with widespread depression and increasing suicide attempts. 📢 You can take a stand. Education is a fundamental human right and is instrumental in upholding all other rights, including the right to health. Help us make the right to a quality education a reality for Afghan women who are being denied their right to education, their right to healthcare, and the freedom to choose their own path.
