Leslie Karras and I attended the International Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Conference in Houston this weekend. Thank you Gary Bloom for inviting us to participate. There were some fantastic discussions that shed light on new treatment approaches, including the session with Jennifer Holkem and Dr. Dipan Desai on radiofrequency ablation for early papillary thyroid cancer. I learned much from speaking with patients and survivors of thyroid cancer. One patient with papillary thyroid cancer commented, “I have difficulty with doctors who tell me that this is a ‘good cancer’; it’s so invalidating.” I heard how important it is to patients to explore treatments that preserve their thyroid gland. In that same vein, doctors want to understand how to select patients for treatments that preserve the thyroid gland. I spoke with patients who are grateful to be alive with cancer yet grapple with the side effects of the drugs that keep their cancers at bay. And I spoke with patients without cancer who continue to experience intense anxiety the week before their follow-up visit with their doctor, even 18 years after diagnosis. The Fear of Recurrence could potentially be diminished with reassurance that their thyroid cancer has a low molecular risk. And then there was the presentation that memorialized thyroid cancer patients who lost their lives this year. It was a stark reminder that, even though most thyroid cancers are considered a “good cancer”, and even though new drugs can help some patients to live longer, thyroid cancer can be fatal. Thyroid cancer has a lasting impact. It is incumbent on the medical community to provide less toxic and costly treatments as well as reassurance whenever possible. At the same time, we need to recognize cases at risk of recurrence, so that appropriate treatments can be provided upfront.
