OEMS MUST LEARN: Reliability and Owner satisfaction AREN'T THE SAME!!
Maybe it's why you're going broke.
Different people want different things from their cars. That's why we have a wealth of models, body styles and price points.
What's more, some people want reliability, some people want satisfaction.
Alfa Romeo has always drastically prioritized driver experience over reliability. Toyota the opposite.
So, comparing these two brand indices by @visual capitalist and @consumer reports is revealing.
It's always worth pointing out that reliability is always going to be more factual and data driven, while satisfaction is about "feelings".
Here's some thoughts:
1. ELECTRIC ONLY OEMS
The 2 electric only brands are Rivian and Tesla, are at the top of the list for satisfaction; and at or near the bottom of the list for reliability!
From reading many comments, you'd think it would be the other way around!
Here's what I think is the issue: There's a lot more to making a vehicle than just drivetrain, and I suspect it's the everything else that's causing problems, especially as both are doing cutting edge technology WAY in front of incumbent OEMs.
However, if we're measuring reliability for drivetrain only, I expect EVs to be WAY in front.
2. RELIABILITY
Quite remarkably, reliability is closely grouped with the manufacturer's country of origin. Japan at the top, US at the bottom; which suggests country culture is imposed of process and reliability.
3. SOME SUCK AT BOTH
The 3 least satisfying vehicle brands Jeep, Volkswagen and Nissan also have below average reliability. I suspect that this is not a coincidence. That's because the vehicles don't have other strong redeeming qualities like Tesla and Rivian.
Also notable, these bottom 3 are all in deep financial poo 💩 right now, wheras Tesla and BMW are very solid.
Interestingly, one model is an exception. Jeep Wranglers have extremely high resale, which supports neither assumptions. These things are terrible to drive everywhere but hard core off-road trails.
4. PERSONAL REFLECTION
Interestingly, my own experience doesn't completely lineup with this. Our 2x new Subaru WRXs had appalling reliability and we're reasonably fun to drive. The Toyota's had OUTSTANDING reliability and weren't that fun (though the Tacomas and 4Runners were kinda cool). The Teslas were both a bit average in build quality, even if they were reliable. However, they're super fun to own and drive.
In other words, with all of this your personal experience may vary.
What's your takeaway from this graphic? Is OEM financial performance and owner satisfaction correlated?
Do you prioritize owner satisfaction over reliability in your vehicle purchases?
