Thank you to MPP Zee Hamid, the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance, MPP Donna Skelly, Flamborough—Glanbrook (Hamilton), and MPP Sam Oosterhoff, the Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries, for hosting us today at the Grand Oak Culinary Market - Grand Oak Hall in Vineland, Ontario, for the 2025 Budget Consultation. Our Chair-Elect, Lisa Taylor, spoke to the Members of the Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and emphasized that the 2025 Ontario Budget must focus on housing affordability. The ongoing housing affordability crisis requires immediate action. REALTORS® witness its impact daily: young families are being priced out of the market, seniors are struggling to downsize, and communities are struggling to retain the workers and professionals they need to thrive. REALTORS® in Niagara and throughout the province are prepared to collaborate with the government to create a more affordable housing market. The 2025 Provincial Budget must demonstrate a clear commitment to reducing taxes on housing and increasing supply, as housing affordability is crucial for Ontario’s economic future. We appreciate the opportunity to provide our feedback and look forward to working with the Ontario government on housing affordability. The Niagara Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Statement on Ontario Liberal Housing Plan (December 12, 2024 – Niagara) – Niagara, like all of Ontario, is facing a historic housing crisis. Young families and first-time buyers are looking for bold leadership that will make homeownership more accessible and affordable. The Ontario Liberal Housing Plan (More Homes You Can Afford) announced yesterday proposes strong action towards lowering taxes on housing. Bonnie Crombie’s promise to eliminate the provincial land transfer tax for first-time home buyers will save young families tens of thousands of dollars, reducing a significant barrier to homeownership. These savings will help with downpayments and monthly mortgage costs, putting more housing options within reach for first-time buyers. The Niagara Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has called for tax reforms to make housing more accessible. The current provincial land transfer tax rebate hasn’t kept up with rising home prices, leaving first-time buyers with an ever-growing tax bill. It’s time for meaningful action to cut taxes on housing. We urge all political parties to champion lower taxes on homeownership so that more young families in Niagara and beyond can achieve their dream of owning a home. Nathan Morrissette 2024 NAR Chair #niagararealtor #niagararealtors #niagararegion #housingaffordability #housing #housingattainability #niagararealestate #niagaraassociationofrealtors
