New Gold’s New Afton Mine has a longstanding relationship with the University of British Columbia’s Mine Rescue Team to provide on-site training at the mine. Thank you to New Afton’s Fire and Mine Rescue team members who supported the students and good luck to all the participants at the competition in February! UBC Mine Rescue
We'd like to thank New Gold Inc.'s New Afton Mine for allowing us the opportunity to train at their site. Also, a great thanks to Carson Fraser and Cory Beeton for hosting and training us! On November 9th and 10th, we trained at New Afton Mine. The weekend was part of our preparation for the Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) Competition, which will take place in Golden, Colorado, this February. 16 members focused on critical mine rescue skills. This included high-angle rope rescue, benching procedures for closed-circuit breathing apparatuses (CCBAs), and packaging victims for transport. A full-scale underground simulation allowed for the application of the skills developed over the weekend. Two student response teams were deployed into the mine while surface coordinators managed operations at the fresh air base. This scenario mirrored real emergency conditions, providing valuable practice in decision-making, coordination, and adaptability under pressure for new and seasoned members alike. This focused training weekend strengthened the team's technical capabilities and operational readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared to represent UBC and excel at the MERD Competition. Additionally, thanks to all of our sponsors for making these things possible!

This fall, the Rainy River Mine acquired a new fire engine, replacing a fleet of two older fire trucks. “This really allows us to enhance our firefighting capabilities, ensuring the protection of employees and facilities, and potentially even offer as assistance for local firefighting efforts where possible in the future,” said Jarid Sandelovich, Emergency Services Coordinator.
