Very happy to be a part of the Matrix team that undertook the design and construction administration for the rehabilitation of Taylor-Massey Creek at the Ferris Creek confluence in the City of Toronto. The design incorporated engineering and natural channel design to improve channel function and stability while protecting at-risk City infrastructure. The design included the rehabilitation of storm outfalls, protection of trunk and lateral sanitary sewers, two new pedestrian bridges and a connecting trail network. The construction was completed this year and post-construction monitoring is ongoing.

  • 🦇 Celebrating #BatWeek from October 24 – 31! 🦇 Bat Week is an annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. In honour of this week, we’re sharing a few bat facts and project photos that our environmental scientists have captured over the years. 💭 Did you know? ✅   Bats are present throughout the world except Antarctica with more than 1,400 bat species worldwide (Canada is home to 18 species) ✅ Most bats are insectivores (insect-eaters), and many of the rest are frugivores (fruit-eaters) or nectarivores (nectar-eaters) ✅ Bats consume insect pests, reducing the need for pesticides and other insect management measures. In the US, bats are estimated to save farmers at least $3.7Billion / year in pest control services ✅ White-nose syndrome has killed over 90% of northern long-eared, little brown and tri-colored bat populations in fewer than 10 years, according to a study published in Conservation Biology (https://lnkd.in/gg23KbAg) ✨ What type of bat projects do we do? ✨ Bats play an important role in the ecosystem and our experts are dedicated to minimizing threats where possible. Our teams have completed several mist netting surveys, and currently process acoustic monitoring datasets from across Canada and the US. This data is used to understand bat distribution and activity to provide guidance on site-specific mitigation measures. To learn more about Bat Week, click here: https://batweek.org/
