Yesterday afternoon, The Clinic residents came together for their second Residency Round on “Understanding their Market Research”. It was great to see so much engagement on this topic from the cohort. Residents heard an overview on market sizing for health startups from Shaaf Farooq, MHI, PMP, The Clinic’s program manager, followed by a deeper dive into market research for biomedical innovations with Jean-Paul Laurin, business development advisor and consultant to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. Laurin is also a program instructor with the #HeersinkSchool in the Master of Biomedical Innovation program. #healthinnovation #machealthice #mcmaster

Did we mention that supporting health innovators is simply the best?! We can't wait to see the continued success of the Medium AI team!
On November 20, McMaster University’s entrepreneurial community gathered to celebrate the culmination of Startup Survivor, our annual pitch competition. Five innovative student teams competed, with $30,000 in funding on the line to support their groundbreaking ventures. First place and $15,000 went to Power of Play, co-founded by Faculty of Engineering - McMaster University and McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences students Deena Al-Sammak and Rooaa Shanshal. Their star product? A dinosaur-shaped diagnostic tool that lights up while measuring children’s hand grip strength. This playful yet precise device addresses a critical gap in pediatric rehabilitation, giving clinicians accurate data to better support young patients in their recovery journey. 🥈 Second Place ($10,000): Medium AI (Kino Song) A software platform that helps healthcare providers manage multilingual patient documentation, saving clinics time and boosting revenue. 🥉 Third Place ($5,000): Respyra Technologies (Hunter Csetri) A device designed to make intubation safer and more efficient, improving outcomes during critical medical procedures. Rounding out the finalists were Winged Wheelchairs (Bohdan Mozharivsky), which enhances mobility for manual wheelchair users, and The Local Reach (Evan Ferreira), offering restaurants and bars a unique way to monetize commercial breaks on in-house TVs. The evening wouldn’t have been possible without the insight and expertise of the judging panel: Amanda Nguyen: Founder of Boardball Inc. and DeGroote School of Business - McMaster University grad Tricia Mumby: Co-founder of Mabel's Labels Bernie Li: Partner at Antler Jennifer Renda, MBA: President & CEO of Diverso Solutions Inc. And finally, thank you to our incredible sponsors: CITM - Centre for Integrated Transportation and Mobility, The Sam and Roma Mercanti Foundation, and Ontario Centre of Innovation for supporting the next generation of youth entrepreneurs. Congratulations to all participants for their dedication, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Each team demonstrated how innovation can solve pressing problems, from healthcare to accessibility and entertainment. Here’s to another inspiring year of Startup Survivor!
