  • As the national hub for advancing First Peoples' participation in a sustainable and prosperous energy future, Indigenous Clean Energy (ICE) recognizes the importance of Canada's first Clean Electricity Strategy, Powering Canada's Future, recently announced by the federal government.   Powering Canada's Future outlines a roadmap to deliver more affordable, reliable, and clean power to meet increasing energy demands. This strategy introduces essential investments and regulations aimed at fostering Indigenous leadership in clean energy development.   The strategy represents a collaborative effort among provinces, territories, civil society, industry, and Indigenous partners, incorporating recommendations from the Wah-ila-toos Indigenous Council and the Canada Electricity Advisory Council. This reflects a much-needed collective commitment to advancing a just and inclusive energy transition.

Today, we released Canada’s first Clean Electricity Strategy, Powering Canada’s Future, positioning Canada to be a global electricity powerhouse. The Strategy lays out a suite of measures to achieve a clean, reliable and affordable electricity system as the backbone of a competitive, net-zero emissions Canadian economy in the 21st century, with growing supply attracting investment and creating good jobs. Guided by six principles and shaped by extensive engagement, the Strategy will provide a clear, long-term signal that will unlock new economic opportunities for workers and investors, drive cost-cutting electrification for Canadian families and fight climate change by investing in clean technologies. • In partnership with the Métis National Council (MNC), ICE delivered the Shakamohta Program this fall at the breathtaking Métis Crossing.    Shakamohta means to connect in Michif and the program was designed to embody connection in all senses of the word: connection by way of energy; connection with Mother Earth through renewable resources, sustainability and revitalization projects; connection with Métis kin; and the interconnections of all entities. The program was collaboratively developed to advance the Métis Nation’s Climate Strategy, Métis-led renewable energy outcomes, create adaptable support pathways and envision future opportunities.    Areas of alignment and action:  • Intentional spaces and gatherings to ensure community is upheld • Reciprocal approaches to programming and strategies   • Energy education and capacity-building resources • Intergenerational citizen engagement and communication around the energy transition  • Adaptable and accessible support systems

  • The Indigenous Clean Energy team expresses our deep sadness and sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Niilo Edwards. Through his work, Niilo championed Indigenous economic inclusion, environmental stewardship, and equity participation in major projects across Canada.    As Chief Executive Officer and founding member of the First Nations Major Projects Coalition (FNMPC), Niilo was at the forefront of creating pathways to economic reconciliation based on self-determination, true partnership, and shared prosperity. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing economic opportunities and project ownership for the coalition’s over 170 First Nation members and for generations to come.     We want to take this moment to remember and celebrate Niilo’s profound contributions. Thank you, Niilo, for being a force for change and for truly leaving us “stronger together.”

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of FNMPC’s Chief Executive Officer, Niilo Edwards, ICD.D, after a sudden and unexpected turn in his fight against cancer. Niilo was not only a leader but a visionary. As the first Executive Director and CEO of FNMPC, he took on the challenge with an unwavering commitment to economic inclusion, shaping the organization into what it is today: a driving force for First Nations participation in major projects across Canada. Niilo believed sincerely in the power of partnerships rooted in respect, trust, and shared prosperity—principles that will continue to guide us as we move forward. “We are heartbroken by the loss of Niilo, who is like family to us here at the FNMPC. As a founding member of the FNMPC, his legacy and vision will continue to inspire and guide us as we move forward. Niilo’s unwavering dedication and visionary leadership have been instrumental in advancing the FNMPC to where we are today. His commitment to economic inclusion and supporting First Nations to lead in meaningful partnerships has set a standard for us all. While there may be some adjustments as we navigate this difficult time, the Coalition will continue to serve its members while we mourn Niilo.” - Executive Chair Sharleen Gale. To honour Niilo’s memory, donations can be made to the Organ Donation and Transplant Research Foundation of BC at www.odtrf.org. We thank our members, partners, and supporters for your understanding, kindness, and grace during this difficult time. Niilo’s legacy will forever inspire our path forward. As Niilo would say, “We are Stronger Together".

The clean energy transition is inherently connected to Mother Earth and Indigenous Nations around the globe. Indigenous Clean Energy aims to sustain solidarity with kin around the world through reciprocal support pathways and programming. To continue the actualization of this work, ICE hosted the first-ever global Indigenous delegation at our 2024 Gathering.   We are so grateful to our kin for making the journey from their homelands to Turtle Island. They brought awe-inspiring perspectives, experiences and dreams from Argentina, Aotearoa, so-called Australia, Colombia, Denmark and Ecuador. Global connections are essential to advancing a just and equitable energy transition and ensuring that Indigenous Peoples, Campesinos and Afro-Descendants are centred. Photos by Nhattan Nguyen
