  • The Last Thing SMEs Need Now is the DST At IAB Canada, we’re committed to advocating for the backbone of Canada’s economy—Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Recently, we had the privilege of participating in a closed-door roundtable hosted by StartUp Canada, where we heard directly from SME founders about the challenges they’re facing in today’s uncertain economic climate. With a plunging Canadian dollar, political instability in Ottawa, stalled legislation, and looming threats of a trade war with the U.S., the Digital Services Tax (DST) is proving to be yet another burden on these businesses. Here’s what we heard: 💸 Retroactive Taxation: Some SMEs could be hit with more than $100,000 in unexpected taxes, setting a dangerous precedent in Canadian tax law. 🇨🇦 Mixed Signals: The DST undermines federal support for SMEs, especially as the U.S. becomes a more appealing jurisdiction for earning American dollars. ❓ Lack of Awareness: Many entrepreneurs are unaware of the tax and its implications, highlighting a critical need for government clarity. 🔄 Dual Negative Impact: Large companies’ reduced budgets make them less willing to partner with startups. Small marketing and digital service providers must charge clients more, impacting startups, charities, and non-profits. Canada’s SMEs are key drivers of GDP and innovation, but the DST threatens to stifle their growth and success. Unless the government eliminates this tax—or at least its retroactivity provision—SMEs will face unnecessary challenges in an already dire economic situation. It’s time for the federal government to show its support for Canadian SMEs. Let’s scrap the DST. #SupportSMEs #DigitalEconomy #DST #IABCanada #Advocacy #StartUpCanada

The DST Burden: Another tax on SMEs is a bad idea for Innovation in Canada We recently hosted a closed-door roundtable to better understand the impact of the digital services tax (DST) on founders and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) . While there has been a significant focus on companies with large revenues having to pay the price, Startup Canada, the IAB Canada, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce joined forces to better understand the indirect impact this tax will have on SMEs and founders in Canada, and the findings were startling. The DST, otherwise coined by some as the “silent tax,” has an indirect negative trickle-down impact on SMEs, stifling their ability to grow, scale and innovate in this country.  The Canadian entrepreneurship ecosystem and economic growth at large have already been impacted. Startup Canada supports founders in their ask to the federal government to abolish this tax. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gU7sYQ5y #StartupGov
