The next generation is invested in protecting the future, and agriculture has a huge role to play in the future of food. At Durham College, their urban farm has provided hands-on opportunities for students to exchange with farming and new forms of growing like controlled environment agriculture. On the flip side, because of high student engagement the college itself has had to double the amount of classes offered and are influencing the career aspirations of the next generation in a meaningful way. As the weather gets cooler and farmers use the break to prepare for the season ahead, we're getting used to seeing more imported produce on our grocery store shelves. While imports are an essential part of our food economy, we know that many communities from coast to coast to coast are changing what shelves look like with their Growcer farms. The modular vertical farms provide locally-grown, fresh produce year-round (yes even in these winter months). Check out this experiment on the shelf life of Growcer-grown produce to store-bought produce to see the difference for yourself: https://hubs.ly/Q02YwZS00

What type of work/study programs do you offer on campus? Are most of them within an office or lab? At Durham College at #TheBarrettCentre, students have access to an urban farm to gain hands-on experience in agriculture and want to see agriculture opportunities offered at more schools. ICYMI: Durham College and Acadia University shared why they added a vertical farm to their campus and answered your questions about how they did it and how the initiative has been going so far.
