Spirit bears, or Kermode bears, are a rare genetic variant of black bear with a white coat, found in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest. Carrying cultural significance for the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation, they represent the balance of nature and the resilience of their ecosystems. These elusive bears owe their colour to a recessive gene and thrive in a fragile ecosystem dependent on healthy salmon runs and protected habitats. But challenges such as habitat loss and climate pressures threaten their future. Explore more in IFL Science’s feature: https://lnkd.in/gqwDR_Ea

In Haida Gwaii, the Haida Nation is protecting critical old-growth forest habitat for stads k’un, a unique subspecies of Northern Goshawk. Haida stewardship teams are combining traditional knowledge with modern conservation practices to map nests, preserve habitats, and manage the impacts of invasive species and forestry operations. The Nation secured funding through Coast Funds to support this vital conservation work, ensuring that the forests and wildlife of Haida Gwaii will thrive for future generations. 💡 Learn more about the Haida Nation’s efforts: https://lnkd.in/gATsuduz

Exciting progress for Indigenous language inclusion! With the recent update to the unicode standard, platforms now support characters needed to type and display Haíɫzaqvḷa, the language of the Haíɫzaqv people. This is a key step in supporting language preservation and ensuring equitable access in the digital world. However, many Indigenous languages still face challenges due to the lack of specialized characters in digital tools. https://lnkd.in/gANfsa54
Why is it so hard to type in Indigenous languages?
