Check out this post from our President Chris Stafford on Talent Acquisition in the Mining Industry.
Today, I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind for quite a while—something that I think is really holding back the mining industry from thriving in the future: talent acquisition. Now, I’ve been in the recruiting game for over 40 years, focusing specifically on the mining industry. And if there’s one thing I’ve seen through the ups and downs of the commodity cycles, it’s this: the mining sector has continously faced a shortage of skilled workers. And, time and again, the industry fails to attract the graduates it desperately needs to fill those gaps. I recently saw this play out in real time at a career fair at the University of Waterloo on October 24th. The event was a great opportunity to connect with the next generation of professionals, but here’s the kicker: despite being in a region with top-tier talent—especially in fields like engineering, computer science, and environmental science—the only two representatives from the mining sector were CIM and Mine Connect. Just 50 students showed up, and while that might sound like a decent crowd, when you consider that faculties like Geological Engineering and Computer Science—fields that are directly relevant to the mining industry—weren’t even represented, you can see how much of an opportunity was missed. But here’s where it gets really interesting. A few days before that, I attended two CIM luncheons where the hot topic was Artificial Intelligence. The speakers were talking about the massive impact AI will have on industries, including mining. And here we are, an industry that admits it's struggling to attract the right talent, and yet we’re not even showing up at the places where we can connect with the people who could change the game for us. The reality is, we’re on the cusp of an AI revolution and for mining to stay relevant, we need to be on campuses like Waterloo’s—engaging with students, showing them that mining isn’t just about digging in the dirt, but it’s about cutting-edge tech, innovation, and sustainable practices. Waterloo, by the way, is one of the most respected universities in the world for producing top-notch grads in computer science, engineering, and related fields. So why aren’t we there, making the case for mining as a career path that not only supports but drives global progress? It’s a conversation that’s long overdue, and one we all need to have if we want the future of mining to succeed.

Last week, our CEO Chris Stafford had the valuable opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion on Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE). The keynote speaker, an executive from a leading international construction firm, delivered a compelling presentation highlighting the far-reaching benefits of integrating SHE principles into company culture. These benefits extended beyond creating a healthier and safer workplace, contributing to a significant reduction in insurance costs for the organization. What are some innovative ways you've seen companies successfully embed SHE into their culture? #SHE #safetyculture #workplacewellness #riskmanagement #constructionindustry

Visited with U of T Lassonde mining students on Friday, only 10 graduating this year. Impressed with the quality but the mining industry should be alarmed at the low number. If this is representative of educational of the earth science instituitions across the country then there is cause for concern and a need to review what industry could do better to increase interest and attract more young talen and expect this to be a topic for discussion at the CIM conference in Vancouver in May this year.
