What is the biggest challenge Canada faces in 2025? CDA Deputy Director Joseph Varner says it's convincing our allies that we're serious about national defence and security. "That uphill battle, even with the release of the defence policy update and the promise that we'll get to 2% of defence spending by 2032—seven years from now—and all the other things that the government has said and not done, have left us with a huge credibility gap with our allies, particularly the United States. You're seeing it play out with Donald Trump, who is calling out Canada on its behavior, and it's put us in quite a spot. People in this country think that if we come up with little things to appease Donald Trump or make him happy, he'll go away. But he's there for the next four years. [There's] a power dynamic at play. Trump doesn't care about details; he cares about being seen to win politically and to dominate internationally. Right now, Canada's in his clutches and his target sights, and we have a real problem. The one-offs, and "we'll get there eventually," and all the excuses have now come home to roost." https://lnkd.in/gyGwuQXB
