En réfléchissant aux activités du RCE pour 2024, nous sommes frappés par la richesse de notre réseau et sa croissance continue. Cette année, le RCE a accueilli de nouveaux membres du conseil d'administration, du personnel, des bailleurs de fonds, des membres du Consortium municipal, des groupes de partage stratégique, des communautés d'intérêt et des partenaires de programme. Nos liens avec ceux qui gèrent et prennent soin de l'eau n'ont jamais été aussi forts. Nos efforts collectifs permettent au RCE de remplir sa mission, qui est d'inspirer les Canadiens et de leur donner les moyens d'ouvrir la voie à la recherche de solutions en matière d'eau qui protègent notre santé, nos collectivités et notre environnement naturel. Nous vous sommes reconnaissants de votre soutien continu. Nous nous réjouissons à l'idée de réaliser encore plus de choses ensemble en 2025. Reflecting on CWN’s activities over 2024, we are struck by the richness of our network and its continuous growth. This year, CWN welcomed new board members, staff, funders, Municipal Consortium members, strategic sharing groups, communities of interest and program partners. Our bonds with those who manage and care for water have never been stronger. Our collective efforts fulfill CWN’s mission to inspire and empower Canadians to lead the way in finding water solutions that protect our health, communities, and natural environment. Yesterday, Canadian Water Network CEO Nicola Crawhall participated in a workshop, “Moving from Knowledge to Action on Climate Resilient Infrastructure Guidance in Canada.” Hosted by the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada | Logement, Infrastructures et Collectivités Canada, it was a great example of interagency collaboration. Together, these agencies have put together a suite of knowledge products (https://lnkd.in/gAbSYWm8) and standards (https://lnkd.in/gwXejhaY) to assist municipalities and others involved in adaptation and mitigation. The workshop’s objective was to solicit advice from a range of organizations involved in climate adaptation from across Canada, and to gain their assistance in disseminating these guidance materials and accelerating their uptake. In his summary remarks, workshop co-organizer Adam Pantelimon, PhD FRIBA MRAIC MCIP OUQ of the NRC drew attention to CWN’s work on measuring and mitigating fugitive methane and nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater. Recent analysis cited by the World Economic Forum suggests that global wastewater emissions are on par with total emissions from the world’s shipping industry. CWN’s Net Zero Water project (https://lnkd.in/gd4dNAd4), funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, will develop a made-in-Canada pathway to net zero for the water sector, engaging Canada’s largest municipal water utilities, cleantech networks and private sector innovation partners. Discover how Canadian cities are using data to tackle climate change! In 2019 CWN partnered with the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association, Public Sector Digest and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to create a case study series about incorporating climate change into data collection, analysis and decision-making. Each case study highlights the different types of data needed to understand the risks that climate change poses to our water systems. They also show how these cities collect and use this information to make data-informed decisions about adapting to a changing climate. With diverse locations, governance structures and challenges, these case studies from Kenora, Edmonton, Moncton, Saskatoon and Union Water Supply System all highlight the common need for high quality and diverse datasets to adapt to climate change impacts. The York Region (The Regional Municipality of York) has been working strategically for over a decade toward achieving full cost recovery for their water and wastewater services. Faced with high debt and aging infrastructure, York developed innovative financial sustainability plans and public communication approaches to help guide rate increases. Here’s what they learned: 🔹 Intentional communications: Building public awareness around the “why” is crucial. 🔹 Cross-departmental collaboration: Keep internal staff connected to ensure consistency and diligence. 🔹 Affordability limits: Understanding what your customers can and can’t afford, and providing programs to support those who can’t afford the rate increase. By focusing on transparency, collaboration and customer support, York demonstrates how thoughtful planning can achieve full cost recovery.
