Over the past couple of years, advancing environmentally sustainable kidney care has become a key focus of BC Renal as we strive to implement planetary health strategies across our provincial network. Two new studies have substantiated these positive developments among kidney health professionals: a survey of over 500 care providers, in which the majority reported high levels of concern about climate change and unnecessary waste; and a study identifying various strategies for dialysis nurses to further environmental sustainability in the workplace. To learn more, check out our article, originally published in our BC Kidney Research in Focus newsletter: https://ow.ly/AZQY50UsivZ #KidneyCare #KidneyHealth #KidneyDisease #EnvironmentalSustainability #PlanetaryHealth

A recent study featured in the fall/winter edition of our BC Kidney Research in Focus newsletter found that continuing to take immunosuppressants may increase some patients' chances of a successful second transplant. Due to challenging side effects, many patients opt to stop taking immunosuppressants following a failed transplant — but, for those who already have high HLA mismatches with their donors, this decision may increase the development of antibodies and thus negatively impact their ability to match with a future donor. A kidney researcher with the The University of British Columbia, Dr. Mark Elliott has dedicated himself to uncovering the genetic causes of kidney disease — with the ultimate goal of finding new, potentially curative treatments. He's been making waves as the lead for a kidney genetics clinic in Vancouver, where his team is in the midst of developing a new research program to identify the genetic underpinnings of various kidney diseases. Expected to launch in 2025, this project — highly anticipated by patients Dr. Elliott is speaking with — has the potential to expand therapies addressing the genetic causes of kidney disease and provide patients with answers they've long been seeking. Read his full researcher profile, which was first shared via our Research in Focus newsletter, here: https://ow.ly/GvPY50Ukytc #KidneyCare #KidneyHealth #KidneyDisease #KidneyResearch #GeneticResearch #Genetics

This December, BC Transplant is celebrating its 33rd year of #OperationPopcorn! A remarkable show of gratitude, this annual initiative sees dozens of transplant recipients, living donors and donor families visit clinics and hospitals across BC, gifting bags of popcorn and other festive treats. It's a wonderful opportunity for those touched by organ donation to give thanks, and for transplant professionals to meet with patients whose lives have been saved thanks to their hard work.
