Mobility is personal. The freedom to get where we want to go empowers choice and helps us assert our individuality, giving us active independence. But to open new or blocked roads to freedom of movement, it’s often the power of groups that push progress to go further faster. The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) supports startups and innovation at different stages. This work revealed an important need for helping to nurture startups in the pre-growth stage. This is why the Toyota Mobility Foundation and North America’s largest urban innovation hub, the MaRS Discovery District (MaRS) in Toronto, collaborated to create the first Mobility Unlimited Hub (MUH), an ecosystem that supports innovators from across the active mobility field as they grow and scale their innovative solutions to mobility challenges. To learn more about how the Toyota Mobility Foundation and MaRS are making the world more accessible and equitable for all, and why this is a personal endeavor for many of the startup founders, see the video below. With urban populations on the rise, we partnered with The George Washington University - School of Engineering & Applied Science to explore how lessons from “smart cities” can be shared and adapted in other urban areas. We studied cities like São Paulo, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., to uncover what makes their mobility systems work—and how their successes can be replicated elsewhere.
