On the island of Karmøy on the west coast of Norway, Snøhetta has designed three adapted homes for residents with serious substance abuse and psychiatric diagnoses. Shapes, colours and sturdy materials have been carefully selected to increase the quality of living for residents. Customized solutions for housing technology and fire safety is developed to strengthen HSE and safety for employees, as well as reduce the municipality's costs. "We hope that we have created homes that users want to take care of so that they have a longer lifespan than such homes generally have today," says Elin Vatn, Senior Interior Architect and Project Lead. The homes are based on results from a research project that will continue to collect data after residents have moved in. Ideally, the experience gained with the three homes on Karmøy can form the basis for further development of the prototype. For the 100-year anniversary of the The Norwegian Ski Museum in Oslo, Snøhetta has designed a new extension and outdoor entrance for the museum, situated by the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. The new façade consists of a five-meter tall glass wall partially clad by a curtain of Norwegian pine wood planks, 1207 pieces in total, inspired by the original material for skis, and the traditional wooden fence skigard. Since the jump itself and associated buildings are characterized by hard surfaces such as concrete, steel, stone, and dark colors, it was natural to contrast it with elements of softer and warmer surfaces. By dismantling one third of the building underneath the ski jump, the museum is now more accessible and has a more evident identity of its own. We are thrilled to conclude the year with the exciting news that Elle Decor Italia has appointed Snøhetta Product Design as Designer of the Year – for “their ability to bring innovation, research, and sustainability to large-scale industrial projects.” Jury motivation excerpts: « Snøhetta — From the ethical and transdisciplinary practice of the award-winning Norwegian architecture studio comes their new division dedicated to product design. They impressed us during last year’s Milan Design Week with their ability to bring innovation, research, and sustainability to large-scale industrial projects. » « Take the Array system, for example, designed for the Italian brand MDF [...] constructed from recycled injection-molded plastic, with bio-foam padding and coverings in either fabric or recycled polyester. The entire system is fully disassemblable, embracing a fully sustainable approach. Snøhetta also collaborated with Fornace Brioni to create Void, a line of hand-pressed terracotta tiles. Our finalist proposal for the Northeastern University Center for Coastal Cities Climate Solutions and Research Lagoon takes advantage of the water’s edge as a space for climate adaptation research. As a pavilion set within Governors Island’s landscape, the flexible site plan allows for the facility to grow over time to accommodate new partnerships, programs, and audiences. The hexagrid structure of the new terrain creates an urban design framework of park-like paths and networked open spaces that maintain a fluid connection between park and water.
