We are thrilled to conclude the year with the exciting news that Elle Decor Italia has appointed Snøhetta Product Design as Designer of the Year – for “their ability to bring innovation, research, and sustainability to large-scale industrial projects.” Jury motivation excerpts: « Snøhetta — From the ethical and transdisciplinary practice of the award-winning Norwegian architecture studio comes their new division dedicated to product design. They impressed us during last year’s Milan Design Week with their ability to bring innovation, research, and sustainability to large-scale industrial projects. » « Take the Array system, for example, designed for the Italian brand MDF [...] constructed from recycled injection-molded plastic, with bio-foam padding and coverings in either fabric or recycled polyester. The entire system is fully disassemblable, embracing a fully sustainable approach. Snøhetta also collaborated with Fornace Brioni to create Void, a line of hand-pressed terracotta tiles. Our finalist proposal for the Northeastern University Center for Coastal Cities Climate Solutions and Research Lagoon takes advantage of the water’s edge as a space for climate adaptation research. As a pavilion set within Governors Island’s landscape, the flexible site plan allows for the facility to grow over time to accommodate new partnerships, programs, and audiences. The hexagrid structure of the new terrain creates an urban design framework of park-like paths and networked open spaces that maintain a fluid connection between park and water. The new 46 ft. long Sentry Bridge at Watkins Glen State Park will span across the gorge in an arching steel-structured cantilever. Alluding to the curved form of the previous bridge, the half-arch design disappears behind the rocks, leading visitors into the park’s gorge. Craftsmanship is celebrated with materials that are direct, unadorned, and welcoming to the marks of time. Pelleted stainless-steel, bronze details, board-form concrete, wood railings, and local stone each reveal the act of making. To avoid disturbing the unique ecology and geology of Watkins Glen, the bridge structure will be fabricated entirely off site as a single span, and will then be lowered into place by crane. Construction will commence in 2025, with the opening of the bridge anticipated for the 2026 season. Winter is back in the Tyrolean Alps and the ski season has started again. A good time to visit the "long bench" viewpoint in the Zillertal Arena ski resort. Snøhetta not only designed the viewing platform but also the cable car stations. With their simple elegance, the pavilion-like buildings do not compete with the impressive alpine surroundings but enter into a dialog with the striking mountain scenery. A steel staircase, which nestles against the rock face, leads visitors to the ridge, where "the long bench" not only invites to enjoy the views, but also to linger and reflect.
