This week, our Sustainability Specialist Job van Mil was in Bonn, Germany, to receive a special ESG Transparency Award for the work we've done on our Impact Report 2023. We obtained a rating within the 'Excellence Class'. "We have worked hard to position ourselves as a transparent company within our industry, and it makes us proud to see that this is acknowledged by independent parties," he says. Earlier this week, our CEO Bastiaan van Tilburg joined one of IntraFish Media's International Salmon Week panels to discuss challenges and opportunities in the Norwegian salmon industry. One of the topics addressed at the panel was a potential shortage of crucial omega-3s. "There is enough demand for the industry to grow, but this is one obstacle that we need to tackle," he said. Say hello to the GSI network 👋. This month we’d like to highlight Jorge Díaz. Jorge is the Sustainability Director at Skretting – one of four feed suppliers that make up GSI’s associate members. Skretting supplies aquaculture feed for several species, including farmed salmon. An essential part of Jorge’s role is focused on identifying, understanding, and mitigating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks, and he has been integral to the development and launch of GSI’s ESG Feed Risk Assessment Tool. He shares: “To drive the necessary improvements in Skretting's supply chain, it is important to know where we are starting from. For that, we need full traceability across all aspects of our footprint - from GHG emissions to water quality and social impact. This is the goal of the ESG Feed Risk Assessment Tool, to help us better understand what we know and what we don’t know about our supply chain, and identify where progress can happen. It is this high-impact project that makes GSI so crucial, it creates an enabling environment for best-practice sharing, collaboration, and innovation for environmental and social improvements across the whole aquaculture supply chain.
