Resilient ecosystems for resilient communities. CLIMAREST seeks to develop and demonstrate restoration tools and activities at five demonstration sites across Europe, from Svalbard in the high north to Madeira in the south. CLIMAREST is an EU-funded research project consisting of 18 partners from along the length of the European coastline. The project belongs to the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters, and is a member of the Lighthouse for the Arctic and Atlantic Basin.

We are excited to announce that CLIMAREST has formalized our collaboration with Blue-Cloud 2026 through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (#MoU)! This agreement reflects our shared commitment to advancing research and innovation in marine and coastal #ecosystemresilience, #restoration, and #sustainablemanagement. The collaboration aims to advance tools and protocols that support ecosystem restoration and sustainable practices, and will focus on several key areas of mutual interest, such as data integration, Virtual Research Environments (VREs), knowledge exchange and community engagement. The #CLIMAREST Virtual Laboratory will be built on the Blue-Cloud Virtual Research Environment, and our Marine Restoration Lab will leverage Blue-Cloud’s JupyterHub environment to host a series of interactive notebooks. Its objectives include building a robust technical infrastructure, creating virtual laboratories for marine societal challenges, and contributing to the public infrastructure of the European Digital Twin of the Ocean initiative, EDITO.
Anthropogenic (human-caused) change has greatly affected the world's blue forests, causing them to disappear at an alarming rate. Why is this, and what can we do to stop it? Blue forests are a pivotal part of the CLIMAREST project accross multiple demosites, where we look to restore these areas and bring back the vital ecosystem services they provide. Excited to share the astounding findings of our international collaboration led by Ruth H Thurstan and myself. https://lnkd.in/edUTKtx7 We painstakingly pieced together information on the scale and structure of oyster reefs in Europe before the impacts of overexploitation. More than thirty researchers brought together by the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance collaborated to identify records and descriptions of oyster reefs since the 1700s. We found that reefs typically formed over many hectares to kilometers squared, and were home to a unique species rich community. Sadly, only remnants of the habitat now remain; a mere shadow of what was there just 200 years ago. While the historical records provide a vivid insight into the degraded status of European seas, they also provide a clear baseline for future management. As such, it is uplifting to think that, with fastidious effort and significant investment, we could restore these incredible reef systems back to European coasts.
