For all the sports enthusiasts with the Paris Olympics just round the corner, it's all the more reason to celebrate and acknowledge the efforts taken to make the Olympic Village the most sustainable one till date. From geothermal cooling requiring no airconditiong in the apartments, use of recycled and low carbon embodied meterials, future use of facilities, renewable energy to integration of public transport, the total carbon emissions are expected to be 50% less than the norm. Hoping such milestones and initiatives pave the way to a more sustainable future and cities. # Sustainability # Cities # Healthy materials # Technology # Renewable energy

  • At the face of adverse weather conditions, are still approaching design solutions of development projects in the same manner? It’s high time that factors for human comfort and climate responsiveness should be kept in mind right from the beginning during massing studies and feasibility design. With technology and tools, and integration with domain experience, we can make early design decisions which can make the design of our built environment more relevant. As we face harsher summers and winters, orientation of the buildings to have lesser sun exposure in summers and longer in winters means better human comfort and less operational loads. Strategies like structured parking means less excavation cost for basements leaving more untouched open spaces for rainwater retention. Lining the parking structures with residential units and other functions would not diminish the streetscape and safety. Shaded driveways and walkways mean less Urban heat island effect and more pedestrian comfort. By providing open spaces judiciously to ensure that they are comfortable for human activities and use, promote their activation and safety and enhanced sense of community. The amalgamation of all these components and factors would sculpt a well thought of, more rounded design scheme to bring to the table. In the featured video feed, an older masterplan scheme has been reviewed and redeveloped after doing solar and wind analysis comparisons and incorporating the above-mentioned strategies to come up with a revised scheme. The building blocks have been reoriented to get less sun exposure in summers and achieve longer sun hours during winters. Adopting tools not only help to analyze but also help to visualize the massing configuration, providing area and unit calculations simultaneously. Technology integrated with domain knowledge not only helps to make smarter and informed decisions during initial stages but also makes design process efficient. • Striking a balance between functionality, aesthetics, relevance and behaviour is at the heart of any good architectural project. Yet, the design process, the foundation upon which this balance is achieved, can often be undervalued. Substantial time and effort involving expertise, thought process and studies that go into crafting impactful spaces. By recognizing the true value of design, both architects and stakeholders can ensure the creation of buildings that are not only functional but also enhance the lives of their users. ‘The Value of Design’ - Do read the related blog on our homepage in the link given below: https://lnkd.in/g2Y292we
