In December, Sundar Pichai announced the decision to lay off 10% of managerial roles across various levels, including managers, directors, and vice presidents. During an all-hands meeting, Pichai explained that the layoffs were part of an ongoing effort to realign the company’s priorities, streamline operations, and ensure Google’s competitiveness in the fast-changing tech industry. The concept of ‘Googleyness’ played a significant role in the decision-making process. Employees whose traits and actions were not aligned with the refined definition of ‘Googleyness,’ particularly qualities like “Mission First,” “Bold and Responsible,” and “Scrappy” (resourceful), were reportedly impacted.
