In sales negotiations, preparation is everything. If you go in armed only with your price and a discount strategy, you’re already at a disadvantage. To truly win, you need to understand: - Your BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) - Your Customer’s BATNA - The ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement) Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Know Your #BATNA: This is your backup plan. Ask yourself: "If this deal doesn’t happen, what’s my best alternative?" Having clarity on your BATNA gives you the strength to negotiate without desperation. 2️⃣ Understand Your Customer’s BATNA: Your customer also has alternatives. The better you understand their options, the more strategic you can be. Example: If they’re comparing your solution with a competitor’s, focus on what makes your offer uniquely valuable. 3️⃣ Define the #ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement): The ZOPA is the sweet spot where both parties can agree. Knowing your limits and estimating theirs helps you focus on win-win solutions. 4️⃣ Use BATNA and ZOPA to Guide the Conversation: If the customer pushes hard for a discount, ask: "What would happen if we couldn’t move forward? How would that impact your goals?" This subtly shifts their focus to the value you bring versus their alternatives. Negotiation is about strategy, not just compromise. Here are the Top 5 Business Lessons after consuming his journey and interviews👇 1️⃣ Rethink Your TAM The concept of TAM (Total Addressable Market) is often misleading. Markets are dynamic and grow in unexpected ways. Often one of the biggest questions a few VCs ask is "What's the TAM?" As per Santosh, some of the best Ideas were developed when the demand was not even there. For example, if supply increases → demand is also likely to rise. (what happened with the entire data market) Certain events can exponentially accelerate or slow down market expansion. 2️⃣ Avoid Duplicating Growth Strategies Growth strategies are never one-size-fits-all. During his time at ZoomInfo, his team implemented "Programmatic SEO". This took the inbound leads count from 200-300 to 40k leads a month. However, at Apollo, the same SEO tactics brought in only 4k leads. Best practices aren’t universal. Entrepreneurs need to find solutions that are unique to their business. 3️⃣ Lean Into Your Strengths Companies should focus on their core strengths. For example, in the email marketing space, several companies target the same audience but each has different strengths: ↳ HubSpot: all-in-one marketing automation suite ↳ Mailchimp: user-friendliness and brand recognition ↳ Klaviyo: e-commerce integration and advanced segmentation Companies succeed when they play to their true strengths and remain authentic.
