A 2018 study conducted by Samhita and the Collective Good Foundation surveyed 682 Indian nonprofits to understand their fundraising strategies and challenges. The findings revealed that, on average, these organizations raised approximately INR 49 lakh from 191 individual donors in the fiscal year 2018. Individual contributions constituted 35% of their total income, surpassing other sources such as government funding (18%) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds (13%). The study identified several key challenges faced by nonprofits in India: Donor Acquisition: A significant 72% of nonprofits relied on their founders' networks to attract new donors, indicating a need for more diversified donor engagement strategies. Board Involvement: Only 38% of organizations reported that their board members actively participated in fundraising efforts, suggesting an area for potential improvement in governance and resource mobilization. Donor Engagement: Common methods for maintaining donor relationships included annual reports (64%) and beneficiary updates (62%). However, there is room for more innovative and personalized engagement approaches to enhance donor retention and satisfaction. The study underscores the importance of developing comprehensive fundraising strategies, diversifying donor bases, and fostering stronger board participation to address these challenges effectively.
