It ensures that the raw materials—fruits, vegetables, dairy, or other produce—are cultivated, harvested, and handled responsibly. Hydroponics is a soil-free farming method where plants are grown in nutrient-rich water solutions. It allows farmers to control everything—light, temperature, nutrients, and water use—resulting in higher yields with minimal environmental impact. Think of it as farming without dirt but with precision. ▶️ Is Vertical Farming Hydroponics? Not necessarily. While hydroponics is often used in vertical farming systems, vertical farming refers to the practice of growing crops in stacked layers, typically indoors. Vertical farming can use various methods, including hydroponics, aquaponics (fish + plants), or even soil-based systems. 💠 Can Hydroponics or Vertical Farming Be Organically Certified? Here’s where it gets tricky. Organic certification standards differ globally: ▪️ In the US, hydroponic systems can be certified organic under the USDA NOP, provided they meet requirements like avoiding synthetic fertilizers and using organic inputs. ▪️ In the EU, organic certification is more soil-focused.
