Introducing the Science Education Office at NCBS 🌟 We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Science Education Office at NCBS, an initiative dedicated to making STEM education accessible to everyone. Our mandate is to bridge the gap between science and society by creating opportunities that empower learners for all walks of life. As part of this mission, we’re excited to introduce a brand-new collaborative internship program in partnership with JKScientists! Supported by extramural funding to NCBS from TTK Prestige Ltd, this program is designed to provide hands-on experience and mentorship to aspiring scientists, equipping them with the skills they need to succeed in STEM fields. 📸 Here’s a glimpse of our very first cohort of interns! This program is just the start! Over the coming months, we plan to roll out many more internship opportunities and initiatives, each aimed at fostering inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation in STEM education. A big thank you to our partners at JKScientists and TTK Prestige for making this possible. Together, we’re shaping the future of STEM education and ensuring that science truly belongs to everyone. #STEMEducation #ScienceForAll #InternshipOpportunity #InclusionInSTEM #Collaboration

About us
The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), located in Bangalore, is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The mandate of NCBS is fundamental research in the frontier areas of biology. Research interests range from the study of single molecules to ecology and evolution. Along with inStem and C-CAMP it forms the Bangalore Bio-Cluster, bringing together fundamental research, translational studies, and technology development. We are a premier research institute with all the necessary facilities that a research scientist may need. Research interests of our faculty members lie in the frontier areas of biology, and the science at NCBS (a part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ) uses experimental and computational approaches in the study of molecules, cells and organisms. We aim to understand biology at each of these levels to advance an integrated view of life processes. The talent and drive of our students and faculty members continue to show us the way to good science. NCBS’s main campus is in Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) on Bellary Road, in the north of Bangalore. The campus has accommodation for students, visitors and faculty and facilities for childcare, sports and recreation. Another campus, close by and which continues to be developed, has additional student accommodation.

#ResearchExplained! Scientists have long been fascinated by how tissues heal, and much of this research has focused on the epithelial layer. While many studies have explored the integrated mechanisms of #woundhealing, such as tissue proliferation, both through computational and experimental approaches, the #materialproperties of epithelial tissue and their role in healing have received less attention. Researchers from NCBS and IIT Bombay have developed a #mathematicalmodel that can predict the fate of a wound based on its geometrical features and the tissue’s mechanical properties. 🎊 🧪 We are thrilled to announce the launch of our collaborative program series, 'Science and Community: One Health series', Dec 20, 2024, through partners National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), a part of the @National Council for Science Museum, @Ministry of Culture, supported by The Rockefeller Foundation-Alliance for Pathogens Surveillance Innovations APSI-India as part of the ongoing exhibit "Vaccine-Injecting hope" at VITM. 📢 Through this program series, we are interfacing the community with experts in the One Health field, through interactive talks, community engagement, curated hands-on activities, films and exhibits for schools, teachers, colleges and various organizations. Dec 20, 2024: We aim to widen the outreach and knowledge sharing through community interactions with experts, talks and curated hands-on activities and exhibits, by including schools, teachers, college students, NGOs, and various organizations: bridging gaps between science and society, initiating dialog and deliberations around public health, awareness and collaborations. The program series will use the various creative modes of science outreach to share the concepts of pathogen surveillance and its role in mitigating/reducing disease-burden, novel pathogen surveillance strategies, through a one-health approach, i.e., the interconnectedness of human health, animal and environment, and long-term impact of community participation towards better one-health equilibrium. 🔎 This program series will include one expert talk biweekly and curated hands-on activities and exhibits to bring the science of public health, animal health and environmental surveillance, via the One Health kaleidoscope to the society, as part of the Public Outreach under The Rockefeller Foundation-APSI-India program. #ResearchExplained ! Many of the building blocks of life, such as nucleic acid and proteins, are asymmetrical. They can exist in one of two possible mirror-image forms, and their mirror images cannot be superimposed on each other. This property is known as #chirality, and it plays a critical role in the building blocks of life. However, some scientists are exploring the possibility of life on the other side– mirror life forms- cells with all molecules swapped with their mirror images, but that grow and behave identically to their natural chiral counterparts. ✏️ Rupsy Khurana | NCBS Communication Office
