India’s political and economic landscape in December 2024 paints a mixed picture of resurgence and challenges. Politically, the BJP has regained momentum with a landslide victory in Maharashtra, reflecting the enduring strength of its welfarist policies and the BJP-RSS alliance. Economically, growth slowed sharply to 5.4% in Q2, driven by declining manufacturing and utilities sectors. While monsoon-led agricultural recovery and resilient services offered some solace, private consumption and exports weakened, reflecting broader economic malaise. Inflation remains stubbornly high at 6.2%, exacerbated by soaring food prices, while foreign investor outflows and a weakening rupee add to financial instability. Stay informed with insightful analysis from Adit Jain, Chairman & Editorial Director of IMA India, in the latest edition of India Brief. Additionally, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) distribution sector stands at the crossroads of relentless technological innovation and market volatility. With surging demand and ever- shrinking product lifecycles, businesses face a complex landscape that demands both strategic foresight and strong financial management. To thrive, organisations must marry operational efficiency with financial acumen, underpinned by a thorough understanding of market dynamics, writes Himanshu Shah, CFO, Rashi Peripherals. As part of a series of sessions across India examining the impact of the 2024 US Presidential elections, we recently hosted Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, Head of the South Asia Practice at the Eurasia Group, at an India CFO Forum session in Delhi NCR. The session explored the implications of Donald Trump’s second presidency for geopolitics and the world economy. Some key takeaways from our discussions with include the following: 1. A Trump 2.0 administration will be isolationist, reducing America's military presence abroad and focusing on renegotiating trade deals to prioritise America-first economic policies. 2. India is seen as a key strategic ally in defence, and one that provides economic and geopolitical stability. Bilateral ties will be further strenghtened through potential trade, tech and investment agreements. 3. Mr Trump will look to mediate an end to the Ukraine war, with potential involvement from India and Brazil. Sanctions on Russia might ease as part of the resolution. 4. His government will continue its robust support for Israel. Hardline policies on Iran are likely to re-emerge, with potential action against Iran's nuclear programme. 5. The US-China rivarly will intensify as Mr Trump target's Chinese companies globally, risking trade and currency wars that could disrupt global markets and supply chains. 6. Domestically, America will see an aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration, likely leading to prolonged legal battles that will resonate with Mr Trump’s core voter base. #IMA #IMAIndia #CFOForum #Trump #USElections #Trump2024 #WorldImpact Krupa Vasani, Aastha Srivastav, Suraj Saigal, Nirupama Shekhar, Puneeta Chhabra, Garima Singh, Megha Arora, Shrijita Sengupta

In financial economics the four most dangerous words are ‘This Time is Different’. Each time one thinks that the financial markets are well placed and there will be no crisis as ‘this time is different’, there is a crisis soon thereafter. Such is the story of supply-side inflation which was seen as being in coma only to make a strong comeback pushing inflation worldwide. Additionally, Generative AI is poised to transform tax operations in India, with 94% of CFOs and finance leaders convinced of its potential to significantly enhance effectiveness, according to EY’s Tax and Finance Operations (TFO) Survey 2024. This marks a dramatic rise from just 19% in 2023, reflecting a growing embrace of advanced technology in finance.
