The largest bet this year for me has been that all vehicles will be electric someday; we have invested in everything from scooters to busses to trucks to maybe air taxis next... Some interesting learnings along the way are that pollution and not climate problems could expedite the transition. Plus, the drop in the cost per km of commute will, we hope, make good for the initial arbitrage in capex. And yes, energy at source has to transition to green. Thoughts? Research: FinFloww | Gruhas

Imagine controlling devices with just your thoughts—no screens, no buttons, just pure brainpower. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are turning this science fiction into reality, and India is quietly making waves in this transformative tech. With a 54% increase in BCI-related research over the last three years and over 20 universities actively working on BCI projects, India’s academic and tech communities are exploring groundbreaking applications. From prosthetics controlled by brain signals to enhancing learning in schools through cognitive monitoring systems expected to improve retention rates by 35%, the potential is immense. Globally, BCIs are breaking barriers beyond healthcare. Think mind-controlled gaming, projected to see a user base of over 10 million by 2030, or neuro-marketing, where companies have reported a 20% boost in campaign effectiveness using brainwave analysis. As neuroscience advances, BCIs are unlocking seamless communication between humans and machines, transforming the way we connect with and control our environment. The future of communication might just be... telepathic. #NeuroTech #BCIIndia #BCIFuture #BrainPower Nikhil Kamath l Abhijeet Pai

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have evolved from niche scientific experiments to a rapidly growing field with real-world applications. While research publications increased 74x from 1979 to 2020, what’s truly remarkable is the shift toward non-invasive technologies like EEG, which now make up over 60% of recent studies. This focus is driving innovations that are not only groundbreaking but also more accessible for everyday use. The global BCI market, currently valued at $1.9 billion, is on track to surpass $5.3 billion by 2030, with healthcare leading the charge. Beyond neurorehabilitation and brain-controlled prosthetics, unexpected applications like emotion recognition and mental health therapies are emerging. The integration of AI has supercharged BCI capabilities, improving signal decoding accuracy by 85%, enabling precise control of robotics, and paving the way for brain-controlled smart devices. Yet, this sector remains a vast frontier with countless opportunities waiting to be explored.

India is steadily advancing its climate goals, with a vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and interim targets like a 50% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2050 and a 45% cut in emissions intensity by 2030. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is a pivotal solution in this journey. With coal-based energy contributing 900 million tons of CO₂ annually and heavy industries accounting for 30% of emissions, CCUS has the potential to transform India's energy and industrial sectors. Notably, capturing and storing CO₂ could help India cut 329 million tons of CO₂ equivalent annually by 2050, supporting both climate goals and energy security. CCUS also promises socio-economic benefits, creating up to 2 rural jobs per megaton of CO₂ stored while enhancing oil production by 30% through CO₂ injection. Additionally, CCUS technology can enable Indian steel and cement industries to comply with global carbon standards, maintaining their competitiveness in export markets. Despite these benefits, the technology remains in its nascent stage, with pilot projects paving the way. Scaling up commercial CCUS infrastructure is crucial for India to unlock its full potential and lead the global decarbonization drive. The journey to net-zero by 2050 highlights the construction sector’s pivotal role, with concrete production alone projected to emit 3.8Gt CO2 annually if unaddressed. The roadmap reveals that carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) accounts for the largest share of emission reductions at 36%, followed by 33% through efficiency gains in design, construction, and concrete production. Lesser-known but crucial, savings in clinker production contribute 11% to the total reduction, underscoring the need to innovate within this foundational material. As the world’s second-largest cement producer, India’s cement industry contributes 8% to global production, offering a significant opportunity to adopt low-carbon clinker substitutes and advanced CCUS technologies. Additionally, India’s growing renewable energy capacity aligns with the roadmap’s 5% contribution from decarbonizing electricity, positioning the country to play a critical role in driving global emissions down while meeting its domestic infrastructure needs.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) could redefine India’s path to net-zero emissions, making the transition smoother and more secure. With CCS, India’s share of non-hydro renewable energy in electricity generation could exceed 70% by 2050, a leap that aligns with its ambitious target of 500 GW by 2030. This shift also eases the strain on fossil fuel reduction, allowing for a phased approach that balances energy security and environmental progress. 1. Balanced energy mix: CCS enables reduced fossil fuel reliance. 2. Fossil fuel reduction: Potential 10-15% additional drop by 2070. Beyond electricity, CCS could drive significant progress in the industrial and transportation sectors. By 2050, electric trucks could make up more than 50% of freight sales under CCS scenarios, addressing emissions in one of the most challenging areas to decarbonize. Furthermore, biofuels could account for over 20% of liquid fuel by 2070, supporting India’s National Biofuel Policy target of 20% ethanol blending by 2025.
